My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Everybody loves a Karen, or at least THIS Karen!
We met Karen a few shelter trips ago, and were immediately shocked at what we saw - not because she’s a German Shepherd (even purebred dogs end up at the shelter) but because of the condition she was in. Wildly emaciated with what should have been a gorgeous coat that was patchy and thin, her skin was obviously painfully inflamed and infected, her ears were goopy implying an infection there as well, and she looked to have recently had a litter or two before being left to fend for herself for god knows how long. But in spite of all that, her gentle eyes were filled with nothing but love and happiness as she said her wiggliest hellos. So, we added her name to our ever growing list of dogs to go back for if we could. Buuuut we are who we are and barely made it a week before she officially became a Swampie
Despite her horrible appearance, we do believe Karen was once loved and spent time in a home for at least some of her life. This smart girl responds to commands and corrections, is eager to please, rides great in the car, and walks like a dream on leash. It breaks our hearts to think about what happened between then and now We have been working hard over the past few weeks to get her skin and coat back in pristine condition with medicated baths three times a week while she’s been battling a double ear yeast infection, but that won’t stop her from enjoying her high protein meals as we aim to put some much needed meat back on those gorgeous bones! When we met Karen she was only 55 pounds, easily 15-20 pounds less than what she should be
We are looking to get Karen into a foster or foster to adopt home while she continues to heal and become the stunning girl she was always meant to be! Karen is roughly 3 years old, currently 61 pounds, and looking to be your only pet so she can eagerly soak up all the human affection that she can! Simply put, this girl is STARVING for attention and looking for someone with lots of love and patience to spare as she makes up for lost time and reacclimates to life indoors. Reach out if you’d like to be a crucial help in Karen’s journey to adoption

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

When you adopt a dog from Swamp Haven, you’re not just saving a life. You’re beginning a journey filled with love, loyalty and trust. Life can be busy and stressful. The companionship of a dog is a constant reminder to slow down and enjoy the little things. At Swamp Haven, our mission isn’t to just help down-on-their-luck dogs find their forever homes. Our mission is to create a lasting relationship with you and your family.
Adopt happiness. Our adoption process is unique in that we work with you every step of the way to ensure that we’re placing the right dog with the right family. First, chat with us about what you’re looking for in a dog and we will set up a time for you to meet the lucky pup. From there, fill out an application. Once reviewed we set up a time to bring your potential pup to your house for a home visit and trial week. We want to make sure it’s the right fit for both your family and the dog involved. We will be totally available during the trial week for any questions or concerns. The last step is to finalize the adoption. And then congrats, you’re a new member of the Swamp Haven family and your happy tail has just begun!

Our adoption fee is $350

More about this rescue

Swamp Haven is an animal rescue organization that takes down-on-their-luck dogs and nurtures them back to a healthy mental and physical state, so they can find their forever home. Our goal is simple. We save innocent dogs that have been overlooked by society and provide short-term care including vetting (vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip and heartworm and flea prevention) and training to learn how to walk politely on a leash, play in a pack and live calmly and lovingly in their new home.
