Age: 20 months...Meet Makai, a puppy in a big boy body!
Dumped on the streets of OrangeCounty by his previous owner, Makai has been through a lot but despite the challenges, is still full of joy and enthusiasm. He loves all the people he meets and would be happy if life was just one big party with him as the guest of honor. Makai loves toys and enjoys emptying his toy box, choosing one to chew, toss or roll around. Inside the house he is curious and adventurous but not at all destructive. He is potty trained and lets you know when he wants to go outside. He is very affectionate and loves belly and ear scratches and his tail rarely stops wagging.
One of our rescue training partners worked with Makai to help him learn some basics like “keep all 4 paws on the floor”, “crates can be a comfy and secure place to hang out”, “how to take a treat nicely” as well as the beginning stage of “loose leash walking”. He’s a smart boy and is making great progress as he continues his training in his foster home. He would prefer to be IN the kitchen but is highly treat motivated and is learning to lie in wait outside the kitchen. He sleeps in his crate overnight and is happy to take a daytime nap in the crate if his humans need to leave the house. He enjoys training games and knows “shake”, “sit”, “down”, “wait” and “fetch”. His new family will need to continue his training with positive methods so he can continue to be a happy, relaxed and well balanced dog.
A yard would be a prized possession for Makai since he loves to run and chase balls. Outdoors Makai plays with tennis balls, Jelly balls, soccer balls, tug games and occasionally digs holes (but is easily redirected) as well as just hangs out in the sun or shade watching the world go by. Makai is strong on the leash, so having a yard for him to get some zoomies out before a walk would be a plus. He does best with a front clip harness and understands both “let’s walk” and “go sniff” when walking outside the yard.
Makai would be better as your one and only. He likes some dogs but gets bad vibes from others.
As far as kids are concerned, Makai loves them, but younger, smaller kids will probably not appreciate his efforts to engage them. He can still be mouthy when you have something he would like you to share with him. For this reason, kids closer to age 11/12 and confident around dogs would be best for Makai’s forever home.
Makai is a big, affectionate, fun-loving pup who is hoping to find a family committed to helping him become the awesome companion we know he can be. Makai will need a handler who can manage a large, strong pup. Someone who is home a lot and would love to continue the positive training that he is currently receiving. A single family home with a yard would be best to get his zoomies out. Cats are unknown but he would likely chase them for fun.
Makai’s ideal home would have a large yard for him to roam and get his zooms out. He would like to have someone home most of the time. He loves his walks and is doing really well with a loose leash. Makai would be best in a home with no other dogs. Makai loves following you around and hanging out with you.
