Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Health
• Edgar takes anti-anxiety medication (fluoxetine and gabapentin) easily in a piece of banana, treat or with peanut butter.
• Edgar is neutered and up to date on all vaccinations, and takes heartworm, flea and tick prevention medication monthly.
Temperament
• Edgar has lots of energy and requires daily exercise and mental stimulation (fetch, swimming, sniffing walks, finding his toys/treats, obedience training). He currently gets 1.52+ hours of exercise. Once exercised, he is calm in the house.
• Edgar is a nervous dog who has not adapted to living in a condo and the city despite being raised here from puppyhood. He is fearful of new people (especially kids), objects and some dogs, and the busyness of city life is hard on him. He is taking anti-anxiety medication which is helping to continue to increase his confidence and reduce reactivity
• He walks well on leash as he knows he will not be asked to interact with any people or dogs. He ignores people and dogs that ignore him, however if he is approach by an unknown person or dog he will react by barking at the person and lunging at the dog. He requires slow, repeat introductions to new people and dogs, and support to conquer his fear of “scary” objects. When introduced properly to new people, he warms up within 20-30 minutes.
• Edgar loves being with his people and is always close by. He is a wonderful, sweet and goofy boy that loves nothing more than to bring over a toy to play and wiggle all over his people. He is a confident, lovely dog when comfortable
• Edgar has dog friends, however is dog selective and fine to only hang out with his people
• He has had obedience training and been on pack walks, boarded, to cottages, homes of family and friends, and an assisted living facility. He is initially quite stressed in new environments, but becomes comfortable with management/support and repeated exposure. • Edgar does well home alone for up to 5 hours. He is crate trained, however has full access to a bedroom and happily puts himself away as he knows a special treat (frozen kong with wet food) is coming. He is not destructive and understands what is off-limits to him, and signals that he needs to potty.
• He is very smart and eager to train and learn new things. He knows: sit, down, stand, stay, roll, paw, touch, weave, spin, up, off, wait, leave it (objects and squirrels), drop (not his ball though), bring (for his ball or other objects), let’s go, let go, watch me, go to your mat, crate, come, free, potty and find it. He understands a number of words, like “help”, “home” and the names of many human and dog friends
• Edgar has never snapped at or bitten a person. He does wear a muzzle at the vet when getting his vaccinations/physical examined out of caution, as he is very scared. He resource guards his ball from dogs, but never from humans.
Owner suitability
• Edgar will do best in a calm environment in a quiet suburb or outside the city, in a home without many people coming and going.
• Edgar needs a home with experienced and patient owners who can continue to build his confidence. He does well with a consistent routine and knowing what’s expected of him, and requires slow introductions and time to feel comfortable and accept new people, dogs and places.
• A home without children is a must as Edgar is quite nervous around them. When small children visit, Edgar is kept on a leash or put in a separate part of the home.
• It is not recommended that Edgar live with cats or small pets due to high prey drive. He could live with the right dog but ideally is the only dog in the home.
• Due to high exercise needs, Edgar needs a fenced in yard where he can run off-leash. He needs active owners who like to be outside year round and will throw his ball many, many times.
