My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our adoption process can be found on our website here: www.mnpocketpetrescue.org/process

Hello, I'm Knocking on Heaven’s Door, a rat with a gentle soul and a curious mind. I'm a bit shy but once I get to know you, we'll be the best of friends. I have two friends here, Devil Went Down to Georgia and Stairway to Heaven, but I'm always open to making more. I'm quite smart and independent, which means I don't require constant attention. I enjoy a good nap in my hammock after a day of exploring. Adopting me would mean bringing home a friend who is gentle, smart, and independent. I'm not just a pet, I could be your companion, your confidante, your friend.

Notes from his foster: Knocking on Heaven's Door is the most outgoing of the group, he jumps up on her lap for treats and was the first to do this. He doesn’t like to be touched although his foster is slowly introducing light strokes on his side. He likes to explore the area when out for playtime and plays with others.

Estimated birth date: 1/16/23

Personality: Curious, Friendly toward humans, Hesitant, Readily allows you to pick it up, Sweet

Favorite treats: Cheerios, Gerber baby puffs, scramble egg.

Current Diet: Oxbow Essentials Adult Rat Food, Fruit, Veggies

Favorite toys and activities: boxes, exploring during free roam time.

Potty trained: Litter box trained

This animal’s daily routine: I feed them breakfast around 7:00 am and dinner around 4:30 pm. I take them out for free roam time around 3:00 for an hour. I sit with them for most of the time, then leave to clean out to cage and place new fleece.

BFF (Does this animal have or need a friend of the same species in their home?): Yes, Knocking on Heaven's Door, Stairway to Heaven, & Devil Went Down to Georgia are a bonded trio who must be adopted together.

Other species this pet has been exposed to and reaction: Dog-nervous

Has this animal been exposed to children? What was their reaction? None

Health concerns: He is around 2 years old and has what we think is early HLD. He also has a small bump on his lower left side that has been examined by a vet and I am advised to just monitor.

Behavioral concerns: Knocking on Heaven's Door, Stairway to Heaven, & Devil Went Down to Georgia are in our trust training program for general shyness. Learn more about our trust training methods at https://www.mnpocketpetrescue.org/trust-training

Knocking on Heaven's Door, Stairway to Heaven, & Devil Went Down to Georgia came to MNPPR when their previous owner was no longer able to keep up with care.

11/4: I have had him and his 2 cage mates since May.They were shy and fearful. I worked with him patiently and slowly to gain trust.Initially I used hides to transfer rather than picking him up. Knocking has progressed to allowing me to pick him up and briefly hold him. He is not super comfortable being held and struggles after a short period.

Notes from his foster: Knocking on Heaven’s Door has developed HLD but continues to navigate the cage well. He is slower than the others to get to breakfast and dinner ( although he used to be first!), so I remove him from the cage and feed him high calorie foods and Boost to make sure he is getting enough food. He has a good appetite but has lost weight. He does have a small lump near the left armpit that I monitoring. He has had multiple bouts of URI which responded well to an antibiotic regimen. I am always watching for new symptoms of URI. He continues to be healthy. He is allowing me to hold him for longer periods during free roam time. I can pick him up with no problem. He’s a sweet guy!

More about this rescue

MN Pocket Pet Rescue is a 501(c)(3) organization primarily serving the Twin Cities Metro Area, focusing on education and public outreach. Our intent is to keep all animals in their homes, with their families, whenever possible. We are committed to rescuing those pocket pets that are in jeopardy of being euthanized or are in danger of being abused, left unattended or in other types of vulnerable situations. We ensure all animals receive proper veterinary care, medication and special training for any behavioral issues, as well as to arrange safe, temporary homes for these animals until stable forever homes can be found. Our team is made up of enthusiastic volunteers who work passionately to serve the underrepresented and often misunderstood niche of pocket pets in the overall rescue community and general public.
