Say hello to Loofah! Her story is a sad and long one, but it is very much worth the read.
Loofah is a 5-year-old mixed breed female who is a bashful sweetheart. Loofah came to us on New Year's Day after being found running at large in Hornerstown. An HSCC staff member had picked Loofah up and she has been with us ever since.
Upon intake, Loofah was underweight, unhealthy and looked pretty rough. At first, her symptoms left Loofah quarantined until HSCC staff was sure whatever Loofah had, could not pass to the other dogs in our care. After skin scrapes and other tests, it was determined Loofah has a skin condition that is not contagious, however, she will require medical treatment most likely for the rest of her life. Right now, Loofah looks better than she ever has before, and she continues to make progress with medical treatment and other skin care routines. Her skin is darkening as it heals, and hair regrowth is very difficult. She is having a hard time regrowing hair, if she will regrow it at all in certain places. But Loofah takes everything one day at a time, and we're so proud of her being such a good sport about everything!
Her diet has also been managed to the point that her weight is no longer as inconsistent as it once was. When Loofah came into the shelter, she was very much underweight. After back and forth, gaining and losing weight, Loofah's diet switched to Z/D and it seemed to make a huge difference! Loofah has maintained a semi-consistent weight these past few weeks and we're so proud of her progress!!!
Loofah is a completely different dog than who came into the shelter that cold January day. You can see as you scroll through her pictures what she looked like coming in. Now that Loofah's health and wellbeing has been improving, Loofah can now focus on "being a dog" instead of her body issues.
Loofah doesn't seem to mind cats and didn't seem to mind other dogs at first. More recently, Loofah has been a little dog-selective, so if she was to be re-homed with another dog, they would have to meet each other first to see if they'd hit it off or not.
We don't know much about Loofah's past and that includes how she came to be running at large in the first place. No matter the situation, Loofah still places her trust and faith in the humans around her to make sure she gets her medical treatments on time and her special exfoliating baths when she needs them. Loofah is ready for her spa day with her future furever family. She is hoping she will find someone patient and willing to care for her despite her condition. She is hopeful whoever adopts her, will also be willing to look past her skin condition and just love her unconditionally, the way she deserves. She feels more and more beautiful every day and this sweet girl deserves her furever home.
If you're interested in giving Loofah the furever home she deserves, apply on our website or schedule your meet and greet with a pre-approved application today.
