My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Merle, the lab/mastiff mix, has come a long way since he arrived. He has had hip surgery, gained weight, and is ready to be adopted. Dogs are so resilient, and Merle is no exception. Merle enjoys taking in all the beautiful smells that the great outdoors has to offer on his strolls. He has fun following or leading the pack of resident dogs, large and small. Although he is good with most of god’s creatures we feel bunnies or cats may be a challenge. He can also be a lounger, so, if you’re looking for a mellow boy that likes to go for walks, but also likes to hang out on the couch with you, then Merle is your boy.

Having some experience with mastiffs would be helpful. While Merle is smart, affectionate, and eager to please, his independent and sometimes stubborn nature can present challenges during training. It's important to approach training with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement techniques.

Additional adoption info

We ask potential adopters to complete an adoption application so we can determine if the dog will be a suitable match. Applications are available for download from our web site (http://www.homelesshounds.us/). All family members must meet and agree on the dog. Once the form has been submitted, a board reviews the application, to confirm that the dog is a good match. After that a home inspection is given, to check for poisonous plants, holes in the fence, etc. If everything is in order, then the adopter will foster the dog for two weeks, as the final step in ensuring that dog and human get along well. Once the foster period is completed then the dog is officially adopted (some paperwork will have to be filled out and we request a donation to help save more dogs).
If at any time, for any reason, the adopter is going to give up the dog, the dog MUST be returned to Homeless Hounds (Big Dog Rescue.)

More about this rescue

Homeless Hounds (Big Dog Rescue) is a non-profit, no-kill, 501-c tax exempt rescue which finds homes for dogs of all sizes.
We help dogs in danger of being euthanized in kill shelters find forever homes. We transport and place into foster homes very adoptable dogs that would have been killed in the already overfull shelters. We frequently transport dogs with medical needs to UC Davis before being placed into foster homes.
