Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/.
Please note that because all our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about within an hour of Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit.
Meet Coco Bean! Coco Bean is a 10 year old shih tzu mix who found herself in a local shelter, where she was left by her owners when they had to move to a place that didn’t allow dogs. “Great with dogs, cats, and kids” was written on her owner surrender form.
Unfortunately, shelter workers didn’t see that side of her. They saw a terrified little dog who hid in the corner of her cage and screamed when anyone tried to touch her. They managed to get her out of the cage and off for a walk, and she started to open up. She loved being outside on leash, and even allowed them to pet her.
However, this was not enough of an improvement, and she was time stamped due to her behavior. We were heartbroken at the thought of her not getting a chance, so we brought her to a foster home where we learned who Coco Bean really is.
She is a silly, playful, happy girl who LOVES her humans. She really enjoys walks, as well as napping on the couch with her family. She rides nicely in the car, always ready for an adventure. She will nibble your shoes, while you’re wearing them, if she wants attention. She will then flop over, and show you her belly. And if you dare ignore this plea for attention, she’ll wave her front legs at you, clearly saying PET ME HUMAN!
She does great with other dogs and has lived with dog savvy cats. She has met humans young and old and loves them all, especially if they are willing to give her some attention. She is housebroken but will likely have some accidents when she first goes to her new home as she figures out how to let you know she has to potty.
As much as she loves people, and belly rubs, she will need some time to adjust to a new home. She may spend some time by herself, learning that she is in a safe place. Her adopters will need to be patient with her and let her come to them. We promise she’s worth the wait! It doesn’t take her long to want to be with her people. She may do better in a home with other animals (dog or cat) but she may be fine without them with patient people.
While Coco was in rescue, she was spayed, and had 2 cherry eye surgeries (the first one didn’t fully take). She also had a benign cyst removed from the side of her face.
She needs some eyedrops daily, and she is also on medications for anxiety we had started when she first came to rescue. We think they should continue when she’s adopted, but once she’s settled her new family can discuss weaning them with their vet.
Each eye drop is $60 a bottle, but they last a while. One is once a day, one is twice a day. Her medications are around $60 a month, but as we said she can likely be weaned off once she settles into her forever home.
Coco Bean is a sweet, sweet little girl. She has had some rough times, and just needs a safe place where she can continue to thrive and grow. Could that be with you?
