Here's what the humans have to say about me:
PLEASE READ ENTIRE PROFILE BEFORE APPLYING
DO NOT USE THE INTRODUCE YOURSELF SECTION, A FULLY COMPLETED APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED
Cosi is a 55lb Bernese poodle mix female *spayed and up to date on all vetting now with no health concerns.
She was surrendered by a commercial breeder when retired from their breeding program.
She has a medium energy level, enjoying sniffy walks and exploring the back yard.
She is fully housetrained with no accidents since her first week and no car sickness. Her temperament reminds me of a slightly nervous Eeyore. She is thrilled that you want to pet her and that it feels nice. Now that she is beginning to play, she high steps and tosses small objects around the yard and will no doubt quickly learn to play with people.
Registration with an approved training class is mandatory for her adoption terms
Cosette also requires another canine playmate/suitable canine companion in her forever home to best meet her needs.
She is not crate trained- once she is comfortable in the environment, she resists crating at night, preferring to sleep on her bed.
This is not uncommon in dogs who spent their entire lives in a breeding cage :(
Cosi loves when it’s quiet and she and her canine foster friend Blue can run around the yard. She turns into a super happy, energetic "puppy" and jumps and bounces. Cosi would love another suitable canine companion in her forever home who enjoys playing. Cosette is a feminine name of French and Greek origins from the Greek name Nicolette, it translates to “people of victory,” Cosi, as we have nicknamed her, arrived badly matted and very scared. Huge thanks to Fur-Ever Loved Pet Salon for her urgent grooming to have her feeling much better and more comfortable!
YOUR FOSTER DOG'S ENERGY LEVEL: Medium
PLEASE ELABORATE ON YOUR FOSTER DOG'S DAILY ROUTINE FOR EXERCISE, TRAINING ETC Cosi goes for a morning walk, an afternoon walk and lots of play with the other foster dogs during the day. She participates in handling desensitization activities and generally getting accustomed to life in the house and in the suburbs.
IS YOUR FOSTER DOG FOOD MOTIVATED? She likes treats but is still nervous to accept them from hands
GOOD WITH DOGS BOTH IN THEIR HOME ENVIRONMENT AS WELL AS MEETING NEW DOGS? PLEASE DETAIL Cosi is nervous but curious when meeting new dogs. She gets along well with all dogs and plays with the big dog at the house. When she plays, she jumps around on her big paws, so the smaller dogs at the house avoid her when she feeling bouncy.
HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG RESPOND TO MEETING NEW PEOPLE IN THEIR HOME ENVIRONMENT AND OUTSIDE OF THE HOME? Cosi is very nervous to meet new people and will avoid unknown individuals. If they approach her, she will try to run away. After some time, she will get curious to meet and sniff the new person. Once she has sniffed the person, if they move slowly, she likes to be petted.
GOOD WITH CATS? Cosi wants to play with the cat in her foster home, but the feeing is not mutual. She will chase a cat if it runs, but gets along very well with the foster cat at her current home, sniffing it but generally ignoring it.
ANY GUARDING BEHAVIOURS NOTED INCL GUARDING FOOD/TREATS, PEOPLE OR FURNITURE/VALUED SPACES? IF SO, HOW IS IT MANAGED? No guarding behaviour
HOUSETRAINED? Yes
CRATE TRAINED? No
Cosi is afraid that if she is forcefully crated, that she will be stuck forever. She does sometimes go into the crate and I can close the crate for up to 20 minutes, but if she is carried and placed into the crate, she will bark.
DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG SHOW SIGNS OF SEPARATION ANXIETY? No
PLEASE ELABORATE ON YOUR FOSTER DOG'S LEASH SKILLS. Cosi is just beginning to walk on leash. She pulls and is just learning to take treats and focus on her handler
HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG REACT WHEN YOU TOUCH THE EARS, TAIL, PAWS ETC. PLEASE ELABORATE. Cosi is nervous and avoidant of being touched, but is always sweet natured
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE DOG'S PERSONALITY/TEMPERAMENT She is mild mannered and easy-going
THINGS NEEDING IMPROVEMENT SPECIFICS PLEASE Cosi will need slow exposure to a wide variety of people and situations at a patient pace, to help her learn that people are good. She will need to learn to walk on leash in a more relaxed way, with less pulling.
She will need supervision or a (big) puppy proofed home since she sometimes takes objects to chew which are not for dogs (sunglasses, a remote, coasters etc).
One more caution would be that things which smell really good on counters are tempting. While she has not yet counter surfed, there would be potential if tempting items were accessible
POTTY HABITS: Cosi goes outside at regular intervals and always goes potty before wandering and sniffing.
Skills/Commands
SIT? No
STAY? No
WAIT? No
LAY DOWN? No
LEAVE IT? No
OFF? Yes
DOWN? No
COME? No
ANY OTHER SKILLS/COMMANDS? Cosi is just beginning to trust people, so we are working on saying her name and getting her to take a treat from our hands. We also say “ready?” And when she looks at us we toss a treat and say “get it”. This is helping her begin to look at the handler and focus
PLEASE DESCRIBE CURRENT ROUTINES AND PREFERENCES THAT WILL HELP THE DOG SETTLE INTO THEIR NEW HOME: Cosi is closed into safe areas during the day when she is unattended and in the bedroom at night to keep her from pacing.
STRENGTHS/AREAS THEY HAVE IMPROVED ON: She is gaining more confidence every day.
PLEASE DESCRIBE THE PERFECT ADOPTIVE HOME FOR YOUR FOSTER DOG BASED ON WHAT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED. A perfect adoptive home would be fairly quiet, without young kids or too many loud voices. Cosi will need a safe space to allow her to slowly build confidence and come out of her shell over time. She will need a friendly medium or large dog to play with and to help teach her how to handle new situations and help with her confidence and desire to play with larger dogs.
Dental note: Cosette has moderate tartar with mild associated gingivitis; wearing and fractured tips of some canines and premolars due to the cage environment she lived in at the commercial breeders.
It is necessary to have your vet monitor this at her regular check ups and she may require a dental in the next year or so if regular dental care is not kept up in her new home
ANYTHING TO ADD? With time and patience, Cosette will be a wonderful companion. She has shown that she is very adaptable since she very quickly moved from only feeling safe in a crate, to exploring a room, to learning to feel safe in the house and now walking our neighborhood on leash. With time and love anything is possible for Cosi.
