My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I am looking for a foster or forever family!

Please email fostersupport@thebondbetween.org to sign up to foster!

Hi! I'm Smokey. I am from Arkansas. I have been through quite a bit, but if you show me love and patience I am the most loyal, snuggly pup you will ever meet. My foster mom says I am the perfect size at 30 pounds, as I can just snuggle right up on the coach next to her and protect her if needed:) I do bark if I am startled, or think someone might be hurting my people. I absolutely adore kiddos and will take very good care and watch out for them to make sure they are ok. I am a little unsure of some people until I am sure they are nice and going to treat me well. Once they show me they are there to pet me and give me treats I am the sweetest pup. I like some dogs, depends upon how we are introduced and if I feel safe in my space. I am crate trained and like to sleep in my crate at night. My foster mom says I am quite smart and motivated to please. I have learned how to sit, and lay down and would love to have lots more training so I know how to be best dog I can be!!

From his foster: Now that Smokey is feeling much better it is sometimes hard for him to stay settled and not run or get excited:) He will have to be on quiet rest for several more months, but I am hoping that with all the rest and the next round of heartworm treatment Smokey will be an active, playful pup.

From the Vet:
Hi! I'm Smokey and my vet team at The Bond Between wanted to share a bit more about my special heartworm case! I was lucky enough to get a special surgery at the University of Minnesota where they actually went in and pulled out several adult heartworms due to the increased number and the severity of symptoms that I was experiencing. Good news is that the surgery went great and I will be ready to start heartworm treatments in early July. I am scheduled for my first injection on 7/8 and the following 2 injections in early August on 8/5 and 8/6. These dates need to stay set where they are so that my treatment timeline follows the best protocol resulting in the best outcome which should mean I will be heartworm free! During and 30 days following treatment my future family should keep me strictly rested as any increase in heart rate can cause further damage to my heart muscle. I can still be adopted as long as I am not changing houses to soon prior to or after an injection. I hope to get settled in sooner rather than later! My neuter surgery will be covered, but can't happen until I'm through with my heartworm treatment! Look forward to meeting my new best friend.

Go meet their pets

The Bond Between's goal is to not keep any animals at our rescue office. The majority of our animals are living in foster homes until they are adopted. Occasionally, animals are living in our rescue office that are in need of a foster home.

If you would like to meet an animal at our office who needs a foster, please reach out to inofficeanimals@thebondbetween.org and fill out our foster interest form at https://www.thebondbetween.org/foster

More about this rescue

The Bond Between is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that focuses on the bond between humans and animals. We were founded in 2009 as Secondhand Hounds. Since then, we have rescued over 29,000 dogs and cats with the help of thousands of fosters, volunteers, and supporters in our community. Our organization has grown from a rescue to a first-in-its-class animal wellbeing organization... now The Bond Between! We continue to provide safe shelter, proper veterinary care, and daily necessities for animals while working hard to help them build a bond with humans. We also focus on supporting the bonds that already exist between people and pets with our pet food shelf, respite foster care program, and focus on social services.

We wake up every morning saying YES to connecting people and animals, caring for them, and helping them fill each other’s hearts.

You can help support us today by donating, fostering, volunteering, or sharing The Bond Between.
