My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Dixie do da day is ready to skedaddle out of her foster home and join her forever family. Dixie is an 18-pound, 10-year-old Shih Tzu mix who traveled from Texas in hopes of finding her retirement home. Being an older dog in a shelter in Texas can mean a death sentence, but we know Dixie will be scooped up quickly in WNY.

Dixie takes her retirement very seriously. All she truly wants is to lounge in her bed all day. She will emerge from her bed in order to go outside, or if there is food involved. Dixie loves food. She was definitely spoiled with human food in her previous home. When you are eating, or if she is hungry, Dixie will stare into you soul, with her huge eyes. While she sits and stares at you, she will whine and stomp her front feet at you. You can’t deny her a little taste of what you’re eating. Her eyes won’t let you.

Dixie is fully housebroken and is leash trained. We do expect accidents during her initial transition. She does get along with other dogs but can be slightly food aggressive with other dogs. She won’t snap or bite, but she will growl at them if they get too close to her food when she’s eating. It’s not an issue with people though. Dixie does have a fully fenced in yard in her foster home. She has picked up on the routine quickly. If she needs to go out, once again she will go to the door, bark and stomp her feet. She also asks to go for her daily walk. As soon as she sees the leash, Dixie knows it’s time. Dixie will bark and alert you when she hears noises around your house. Apartment life is probably not ideal for her. She has a loud deep bark for a little girl. Due to her age, a home with older children, 10+, would probably be best. A quiet home where she can just relax. If you think Dixie is the right dog for you, make sure you apply today.

Dixie was recently diagnosed with a grade 3 murmur. Currently she is on Enalapril twice a day. The enalapril helps to open up the blood vessels that go to her heart. The dilation of these blood vessels helps her heart so they are not working as hard to pump the blood. Dixie takes the pill like a champ too. It is added to her food twice a day and she gobbles it right up!  Enalapril is relatively inexpensive and will cost approximately $6 a month.

Dixie is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm.  Her adoption fee is $400

Please go to our website and read about the dog there as well as all pertinent info. for adopting this dog. IF THERE IS INFORMATION NOT INCLUDED IN THE DOGS PROFILE THAT IS NECESSARY FOR YOU TO MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHETHER ,,,GENERALLY SPEAKING,,,,THIS DOG IS A GOOD FIT FOR YOUR FAMILY, THEN PLEASE GO AHEAD AND EMAIL WITH THAT SPECIFIC QUESTION. We are all volunteers with jobs and families and probably more dogs than you, so please understand that we are very busy. We are not able to keep up with the constant general questions and phone call requests that, with a little time and reading on your part, is already included on our website. Replying to all emails makes it very difficult to do our jobs as well as we would like.
All dogs who have adoptions PENDING, will have that info printed right next to their name. Having a pending adoption does not make it a done deal, it means that we are at the home visit/meet and greet phase of the adoption and it could go one way or another so feel free to check back on the status of the dog in question.
We do not have a facility for you to come and visit our dogs. They are in our homes, sleeping in our beds and lounging on our sofa. We value our privacy and do not open our homes to visitors wanting to meet "all the dogs".
Thank you for your interest in our wonderful Pixie Mamas pooches. Without you adopters we could not continue to do what we do. We appreciate your time and effort as well ,to comply with what is needed for us to keep Pixie Mamas Rescue going with as little stress and extra time as necessary.
Our adoption fees start at $200, some highly adoptable dogs are more and others are less - that will be stated in their profiles.
Good luck in finding the right dog for your family.

More about this rescue

Pixie Mamas Rescue (PMR) is a group of volunteer dog lovers whose mission is to rescue, provide sanctuary, and ultimately to re-home abandoned, stray and neglected dogs. We also assist dogs who, because of extenuating circumstances, are unable to remain in their homes. We aid in the rescue of small breed dogs. We are located in Western New York.
All PMR dogs are housed in foster homes where they are provided with an enormous amount of love and any medical attention that may be required to insure that they are in good health before adoption. They are all spayed or neutered and brought up-to-date on shots before being placed in their new homes.
All dogs are evaluated for temperament and personality. This helps us to place them in homes that are well suited to their needs and to the needs of their future owners.
