Here's what the humans have to say about me:
She's a good-time girl who just wants to have fun! This goofy, playful pup is smart, energetic and ready for adventure. Also, Athena has the softest, snuggliest coat, and you can see for yourself that she's nice to look at. She really does have it all!
HISTORY
Athena was part of a litter of five abandoned puppies that were handed in to a local shelter in February 2024. A few weeks later she was adopted by a young couple, who soon realized they were not in a position to provide a safe, stable living environment. They released her to HART on April 5, 2024.
SOCIALIZATION
Athena is well socialized, and she likes and trusts people - especially men. She's happy to greet strangers and quick to make friends. She hasn't been exposed to young children while with HART, but we'd expect her to do well with friendly, dog-savvy older kids.
She shares her foster home with a pack of large dogs and young puppies. She can be bossy with the smaller ones, and may take ownership of the food bowl, but she likes other dogs and is generally respectful. Athena would probably do well in a home with a playful, confident older dog of compatible size.
She is young enough to learn to live with a confident, dog-savvy cat, but when she encounters the shy kitty in her foster home she wants to chase.
GENERAL TEMPERAMENT & BEHAVIOR
Athena is pretty laid-back. She does need daily exercise and loves to play hard with her bigger buddies in the pack. She also enjoys following her nose around the small farm where she's fostered. But given regular exercise and mental stimulation, she's also very content just to kick back and keep you company while you're at your computer or taking time out on the couch.
She is a super snuggly girl, who eagerly seeks attention and cuddles - and her soft coat makes cuddle time a special treat.
She enjoys toys and loves a good chew (and she generally knows the difference between her stuff and stuff that's off limits for chewing).
TRAINING
Athena is crate trained and house trained. She's comfortable on a leash and already knows "sit" and "no". She knows her name, and will come when you call. She's clearly very intelligent, and should be rewarding to train.
It's important to remember: ATHENA IS A PUPPY, and puppies can be HARD WORK. As puppies go, she's an exceptionally good girl - only occasionally mouthy, and not very destructive. But she still has a lot to learn about how to live as a civilized member of a family - and because she's destined to be a big, powerful, strong-willed, independent-minded dog, she needs her human to be fully committed to raising her right and teaching her what she needs to know. Don't apply to adopt Athena unless you're sure you have the time, energy and desire it will take to help her grow into a Good Dog!
HEALTH STATUS
Athena has been spayed, microchipped and vaccinated, and appears to be in excellent health. We expect her to be a big girl when full-grown, probably 80-90 lbs but possibly exceeding 100 lbs. Based on the shelter's estimate of her age on intake she was born on 12/19/2023.
