My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Sunny, a vibrant and affectionate girl who was found as a stray, leaving her past a bit of a mystery. Despite this uncertain beginning, she has shown remarkable resilience and potential during her time with us.

Sunny had the opportunity to participate in the Puppies for Parole Program, where she blossomed. Throughout the program, she received extensive training in house training, crate training, basic obedience, and leash skills. Her socialization skills have also improved significantly, making her a friendly companion for other dogs. While we haven't had the chance to observe her interactions with cats, we believe with proper introductions, she could adapt well.

Sunny is an active girl with an enthusiastic spirit. She absolutely loves toys-her eyes light up at the sight of a squeaky or bouncy plaything! However, she's still learning which toys belong to her and which are the children's toys in her future home. With a bit of guidance, we're confident she'll get the hang of it.

Unfortunately, Sunny has faced some health challenges. She has torn her ACL and is currently waiting for surgery. During a recent examination, the vet also discovered that her hip joints are malformed, which may require surgical intervention in the future. For now, we're managing her pain with medication, but it's important to note that Sunny's high energy level makes it difficult for her to rest as recommended.

Despite her medical needs, Sunny's zest for life shines through. She thrives on outdoor playtime and would love a home that can provide her with gentle exercise, mental stimulation, and plenty of affection. Sunny is looking for a forever family who can offer her a loving environment, patience during her recovery, and a commitment to her ongoing care.

If you're ready to welcome an active, loving companion into your home, Sunny could be the perfect match for you! She's eager to learn, play, and become a cherished member of your family.

More about this shelter

Dogwood Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter.

Since its infancy, compassionate, like-minded volunteers have been the driving force behind Dogwood Animal Shelter. Through auctions and sales, a handful of dedicated people raised enough money to build its first, albeit small facility and was established as a 501(c) 3 in 1976. It was filled beyond capacity almost immediately.

The shelter is funded entirely from donations and proceeds from their Dogwood Animal Shelter Thrift Store.

After years of saving, planning and busting at the seams with fur-babies, in 2005 it was time to build a new facility with their own in-house clinic! Under the direction of Dr. John Reinhold and coupled with a very dedicated and gifted team of Veterinarians and staff, Dogwood Animal Shelter continues to offer low cost spays and neuters to the public as well as services to their shelter buddies; services to approximately 2,000 dogs and cats yearly!

Dogwood Animal Shelter began their journey of being a successful no-kill shelter in 1997, and since then has saved over 40,000 lives!
