Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Elmo - Maltese - Male - 2 years - www.twyla.org
If you'd like to know more about this dog please visit our website at www.Twyla.org
Meet Elmo: this gorgeous little Maltese mix was found in a ditch in Humble, injured and terribly matted. We picked him up from Animal Control and brought him straight to the Vet for immediate treatment as he was limping and was likely in pain from his matted hair pulling on his skin. He was shaved and treated, and went to recover in a foster home. We learned that Elmo is only about 2 years old, and has broken ribs on both sides of his shoulders with nerve damage on his front left leg, likely from being kicked. The ribs are slowly healing, as ribs do and recovering from nerve damage can take even longer, if the nerve recovers. He is not using that leg to get around, but rather to stabilize him when he plays. And does he play: he loves running around and playing with toys, loves babies (!) and gets along well with the other dogs and cats in the foster home. He can be a little spicy with new people, but Vets and groomers both report that when handled with care and patience he does fine.
Elmo is looking for a patient home with or without and other small low key dogs in it, cats are fine, Infants and small kids are fine, but a loud and hectic household with older kids running around is not his favorite. He's more of a quiet snuggle-on-the-couch kinda guy. Short walks are fine, lots of outdoor time is not his thing. He can be spicy with new people and does require patience and time to build trust with new people in his house. he bonds quickly and strongly to his caretaker.
His front let may or may not recover from the injury suffered, he has sensation in the toes but doesn't use the leg tyo get around. As long as he is not dragging and injuring the leg, there is no reason the amputate, according to our vets.
***Please note: All dogs are fostered in private homes of volunteers, so to meet a dog please fill out an Adoption Application on our website (http://www.twyla.org/adopt/our-adoption-process) so we may setup a private meetup with the dog or coordinate for an Introduction at the next general Adoption Meet and Greet (as listed on our website: (http://www.twyla.org/upcoming-events), as not all dogs attend all Meet and Greets***
