My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

PIPPIN is a wonderful dog in need of a special owner. He is 2 years old and weighs 68 lbs. He is half german shepherd and half pit bull (we have the DNA to prove it!) He is a graduate of our Paw Behind Bars prison dog training program.

PIPPIN bumbled his way through his first year. He was adopted as a puppy by a different rescue and spent way too much time in a crate. He was finally returned, but now as a very timid dog, leary of many things that should be normal. Different rescues have different resources so Adopt Me! took him on as a candidate for our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program. Obedience training is only one aspect of what the inmate handlers can address. Building social skills is a close second. First and for most, PIppin now had the companionship of a person who really cared about him. Second, he received the proper amount of exercise and third, he got daily doses of obedience training, canine play time and a slow and steady introduction to sights, smells and sounds he'd never had the chance to encounter. His confidence steadily grew. This is the stuff a good rehabilitation program is all about.

Pippin has graduated from the prison training program and is now in an environment with a crew of very committed volunteers. He is getting extended home playdates with one of them. Where before he was skeptical of anyone, he readily greets them all. He is ready for adoption but will need a special person. He can push through his fears, but he needs his person to help him and buffer him if it's too much, too fast. Because of this, we are recommending a quiet, adult home with an experienced dog owner. This is one dog you can quickly learn to love once he "lets" you in. He tries so hard!
