My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

When we were first contacted about Athena and Xena, we believed them to be bonded litter-mates. Shortly after coming to Sunshine, we discovered that the two girls would do better and blossom on their own. When their dad decided to relocate, he temporarily left the girls with an acquaintance and his family. Unfortunately, their dad was unable to find housing that allowed dogs and could not take them back. Because one of the family members, in their temporary home, is severely allergic to dogs, they contacted Sunshine for help in finding Athena and Xena a new home. Sadly, we discovered that this precious pair of pups had NEVER been inside a home. We can safely say that for the first time in their young lives, Xena and Athena are learning what it’s like to actually be part of a family!

Athena came to our rescue scared of the world. Her lack of confidence was heartbreaking. We know that much of it had to do with a life limited to a crate. But after a couple of weeks in a home with a trainer and his family, Athena is a whole new pup! She has learned so much about how to be a dog from her foster doggy siblings. She has mastered being in a house, going in and out of doorways, and up and down stairs. She no longer shys away from household noises and loves watching TV. Athena has also discovered the sheer joy of having her very own bed, the comfiness of a couch, and sleeping with people in their bed! Athena has learned the magic of hiding, and chasing tennis balls. Athena did very well at her vet appointment as well as getting her bath. She is house trained and is well on her way to the wonderful life she deserves.

Athena’s foster family has commented on what a sweet Golden pup she is. Like a typical Golden, she loves people and other dogs, but she is untested with cats. She has the energy level typical of a young Golden and would benefit most from a fenced in yard. She will do best in a home with a confident dog who can continue to guide her. Athena has been diligently working on her leash and obedience skills. We are looking for an adopter who is home more than not and who will have the time to continue to work with her. Athena also loves children so a home with older children would definitely be on this pup’s wish list.

Athena is currently located in the Northeast. She has been vetted, vaccinated, is heartworm negative and is ready to go to her new home now. Adopters must commit to having Athena spayed when their veterinarian recommends and must provide proof of spay to SGRR.

If you have a fenced in yard, another dog in the home, are an active person or family and are looking for a sweet companion dog to share in your adventures, Athena might be the perfect fit for you.

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun.

If you would like to be part of Athena's rescue story and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Michelle Hamed to be considered to adopt Athena.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
