My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dottie!

Doesn’t she look trim and fit? 😳
Believe it or not, this is after already losing 5lbs since coming into our care a few weeks ago.

Dottie was a whopping 35lbs on arrival, probably double her ideal weight! She looks like a giant chihuahua who ate 10 other chihuahuas, or a mini border collie someone put in a baler to compress into a compact little square for easy storage 🤣

Medical testing has revealed she does have an excuse for her severe obesity besides just clearly having access to all-you-can-eat buffets… she has Cushing’s disease which was causing her excess hunger as well as obsessive thirst. Luckily it’s easily treated and managed with daily pills longterm and regular bloodwork monitoring, and we are hopeful she will live a normal lifespan as long as she continues to lose weight and get back into good health.

Dottie is a joyful happy little 8-10 year old “young at heart” senior. She’s great with other dogs and has always lived with them, very friendly with all people, a star patient at the vet, and loves playing with and fetching squeaky toys. We haven’t seen a mean bone in her squishy little body, or seen or felt any bones for that matter 🩻. She’s pretty active or at least wants to be- right now she tires easily and starts turning blue and snorting and grunting with any exercise or heat. But hopefully if her weight loss continues, by the end of the summer she will be in shape enough to enjoy some fall hikes and fun times with her new people.

She would be a great addition to just about any home that will enjoy her infectious happiness and fun personality, always looking up at you with a smile and ready to accompany you anywhere- a walk, car ride, nap, or just making sure you don’t have to go to the bathroom alone. And of course someone who will keep her toy basket full and doesn’t mind finding squeaky toys all over the house and continue her on her medication longterm.

Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Dottie in Northern NJ

Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We request that adopters fill out a pre-adoption application either in person at our adoption day or through our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com. This helps us make sure the animal's personality is a good match for your household. Adoption fees vary according to the dog's age, breed, adoptability, and how much we have had to spend in vet bill on them. Adopters sign a contract at the time of adoption, and the animal must come back to us if they do not work out in the home.
