THE FOLLOWING CATS ARE BEING CARED FOR IN A LOVING MCR FOSTER HOME.
This boy is Luka. He is a special case and will require a special home. If you are looking for a work in progress then read on! Luka was left behind by his owners in North Carolina. They did come back to get him but couldn't catch him so they left him. A kind man in the neighborhood took him in and called us. He is really skittish at first but once you give him a chance to show you love he really begins to blossom! It took me longer than it should have because he has to stay in my foster room rather than being a part of my family because my cat hates other cats. Such a shame because this cat deserves so much to be given a real chance in a home environment with a family. He likes to lay on the very top level of his cat tree and look down at everyone grumpily. Some days he really is grumpy and you'll learn his moods quickly. Those days I just leave him alone. Most of the time though he really does want love and just doesn't know how to accept it. I've found it's best to come up to him and pet him under his chin at first, rather than the top of his head. Then he will roll around and head-butt my hand and go crazy wanting petted all over!! Keep in mind it took us two months to get to this point so a patient person is a must. As well as someone who knows not to push him or make him want affection. Most cats want affection on their terms but this is even more true with Luka. I really think he has been hit, kicked, or abused at some point because he is just so afraid of being petted at first. Even now and he trusts me. Some days he will absolutely cringe when I go to pet him. I know to leave him alone for a while. Other days he starts to cringe but I just come in from under his chin and that seems to be his "unlock button." I think being touched on top of his head at first makes him nervous. When I would pet his back he would really get upset at first. I truly thought maybe he was painful there so I got a spine x-ray but nothing seems to be amiss. He may have had a tender spot there at some point so he is still nervous about it. I had a foster before who hated her hips and lower back touched. Some cats are just that way and we have to understand. Once you get him to the rolling around stage he doesn't seem to care where he is petted! "Just pet me!" It's amazing to see that switch in personality! He is quirky and goofy then! Luka is a very quiet cat but he did meow to me the other day and this is huge for him! I was really excited! Another day I put wet food down then wiggled my fingers down towards him to try and get him to come to me. He did! For the first time ever he came to me when I asked him to! You have to understand that this cat hid for a solid month after I got him and would not come out when anyone was around. I would pet him and he was terrified. I wish I knew what he's been through but I just know he's had a tough life and seems to have been traumatized. The fact that he's made so much progress is truly amazing. It lets me know he is finally ready for a new home. He will often come out of hiding and stretch as he walks around. This alone is a huge step in showing me he's more comfortable. One thing that is important is that he doesn't like to be crated. For his neuter appointment I had to get a prescription of Gabapentin ahead of time. The morning of the appointment I gave it to him 2 hours prior to crating. This worked perfectly. Later with more time and trust he may be better about just popping him into a crate easily. But for safety and less stress for Luka and yourselves, it's best to do it this way when crating is necessary. Without Gabapentin he didn't try to attack or anything but I could tell he was very very stressed and upset. I didn't give him a chance to go any further or stress him more. I just let him go and rescheduled the appointment. So learn from my experience with him, save yourself the trouble and get the Gabapentin to have on hand. It's much easier. He eats the Gabapentin liquid readily with tuna juice or wet food and it doesn't take much to relax him. I am able to pick him up but after like 5 seconds he gets upset. I think he fears being crated again. With time and trust, he may become a lap cat! But it's imperative to medicate him for crating. Luka has so much love inside. I've seen it and I know he wants to share it. He has a wall up that is slowly coming down. If you're willing to let him do that at his own pace then he may he the cat for you. He will most definitely come around quicker in your home than he did with me in a foster room. He does like other cats from what I've seen so far. I don't know his experience with dogs. He isn't around one at my house. I have a chinchilla in the room with him and he acts like it's not even there. He doesn't seem playful at all but that could change. He's okay with kids being in his room but would probably do best in a home with quiet, older, patient kids. Maybe even a couple or a single person. He's just a stressed boy and doesn't know who to open up to. Many people are like that too. Some are never able to open up at all. But some find that special someone that pulls them right out of their shell and changes their lives. Are you that special someone for Luka? I look forward to speaking with potential adopters but serious inquiries only please. As you can see he really does need a special home and family to make him feel safe and secure. If you are within about 4 hours or 200 miles of Mount Lookout, WV and can meet me half way then put in an application. I can't let him go further than that. While we hope every adoption is a permanent home, if for some reason it doesn't work out I need him to be close enough to get him back to me. Thank you for understanding. Also if you are unable to meet me and need me to deliver him to you we can work that out as well. There is an $85 transport fee added to deliver. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for checking out this precious cat's profile!
