My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Harvey and Hazel!

This "odd couple" have found themselves in the shelter after their previous owner no longer had the capacity to care for them. Harvey came to us with a bit of a head tilt and balance issues. Thanks to the quick catch from our vets and some testing he has been diagnosed with E. Cunniculi. E. Cunniculi is a pathogen that is spread through urine and affects the nervous system of a rabbit. It can cause some significant damage if not caught early but luckily we caught it and are treating them with Panacur. It is actually suspected that many more rabbits carry this than is known because not all rabbits will exhibit symptoms.

Harvey is a big boy and Hazel is the tiniest little girl! Interestingly enough he's the younger one and she's the older lady- at 6 yrs old. She might be tiny.. but she's certainly mighty. She wears the pants in this relationship! While Hazel was obviously exposed to Harvey's urine, she exhibits no symptoms or deficits associated with E. Cunniculi.

Someone understanding or willing to learn about E. Cunniculi would be perfect for this couple. They are so sweet and have great personalities.

More about this shelter

Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. is founded on the belief that all animals have a natural right to humane treatment including proper care and safe shelter. Due to overpopulation, there are insufficient homes for most cats and dogs. Some are lucky enough to find temporary shelter and a few even find permanent homes. However it is a devastating fact that the majority are either euthanized or forced to chance life without shelter.

To support our belief and to relieve the unnecessary suffering of animals, we shall:
1.Extend every effort to find, evaluate, and secure good adoptive homes for animals in our care.
2.Provide animals with medical services and behavior therapy to the extent of our ability.
3.Adhere to a “no-kill” policy: animals shall not be euthanized for the purpose of providing space for new animals.
4.Adhere to a 100% spay and neuter policy.
5.Maintain continuing humane education programs and in particular to schools.
