The adoption fee is waived for Sweet Pea and ALL Desperate Housecats! Sweet Pea was in foster care raising her babies and she did an excellent job! She can be cautious and skittish with new people at first, so it`s important to go slowly with her. Sweet Pea seemed to enjoy playing with her kittens and teaching them how to `cat`. She likes to chat and will have a cute conversation with her human friends. Sweet Pea is currently living with some kitty room mates in our Cactus Cat room, so she may get along with other felines in a home if given proper introductions. She`s getting some extra attention from volunteers through the Cactus Cat program to help her build confidence with people. She will probably do best in a quiet place where she can get used to things on her own terms and be given lots of encouragement and patience.

We think Sweet Pea is a succulent - these cactus cats are low-maintenance and easygoing. With plenty of treats and slow, steady trust-building, you could find common ground and friendship!

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note, Adoption and Pet Resource Center lines close at 6:00 p.m. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.
