My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Calling all humans interested in a fixer-upper with AMAZING potential!

My name is Captain, and I'm a 4-year-old, 65lb Border Collie mix who is looking for a person (or people) willing to help me develop into the super smart love bug that I was born to be. I am crate and potty trained, and I love treats, toys and snuggles.

But, unlike most online profiles, I'm going to be honest - I have issues. I have developed some reactivity to dogs and children, and I've had a couple of bite incidents that resulted from people not knowing or teaching children how to interact with dogs. I've been evaluated by an excellent trainer, and it's their opinion that I need a child-free home - and for the time being - a home without other pets. I am not good with cats, but I do get along with other dogs after a proper introduction. But I am muzzle trained because I do not handle rudeness very well - and since we're being honest, there are a lot of rude people and pets out there in the world.

So until I learn to trust and communicate my discomfort to a human who will listen, I really need a human who will respect my fear and set me up for success. I need a person I can rely on, who can advocate for me and is willing to work with a confidence-building trainer to help develop into the adventure buddy I know I can be.

I'm an amazing snuggle buddy, and if you let me into your life, you'll never be lonely. I have enough energy to accompany you on walks, runs or hikes but enough chill to be your favorite movie or reading companion. I am a guy who has been misunderstood and now has to deal with the ramifications of other people's mistakes. But make no mistake, I am a diamond in the rough, and a best friend worth every minute of effort for a patient, loving heart. I deserve the best. I will give you my best. So, who is up for the best kind of relationship building?!

Since we make a lifetime commitment to any animal that comes into our program, we only adopt out animals to people in our area..

If you are interested in adopting a CAWS cat or dog, please fill out the online application at http://www.caws.org/application/, email adopt@caws.org or call 328-4731. For the most timely response applying online is recommended.

Go meet their pets

CAWS does not have a conventional shelter facility - all CAWS animals waiting for adoption are in foster homes. The number of animals we can help find new homes for is closely linked to how many CAWS foster homes are available. For additional information regarding how you, too, can become a foster, please see our fostering page located on our web site!

CAWS volunteers bring cats and dogs to the PetSmart near 2100 South and 300 West in South Salt Lake on the third and fourth weekends of each month

We are also at the Sugarhouse PETCO (1165 Wilmington Ave) the first Saturday of each month.
