This confident, happy, friendly little guy is always just thrilled to meet new people, and loves going to new places - especially if they involve a walk or a car ride. And on cold winter nights you'll never find a better foot-warmer than little Papaya, when he dives under the comforter with you and burrows down to snuggle your toes.
HISTORY
Papaya was in dire shape and very hungry when he followed a little boy home from school in 2019. He landed in a local shelter, which placed him in a foster home. He won his foster mom's heart and she adopted him, but now her circumstances have changed and she has asked us to help him find a new FOREVER home.
SOCIALIZATION
Papaya wastes no time in befriending everybody he meets. He hasn't been around children since being adopted, but we would expect him to love kids who are kind and gentle.
He has shared his home with several dogs of various sizes and ages, and he gets on with all of them - although he isn't comfortable with large, rude, bouncy puppies. He is especially great with little dogs, and loves to play.
He generally ignores chickens and ducks ... except when they chase him. He hasn't been around cats, but we'd expect him to be polite and friendly with a confident, dog-savvy cat.
GENERAL TEMPERAMENT & BEHAVIOR
Papaya is simply a sweet, kind, loving, constantly happy boy. He loves to snuggle, and if he's relaxing and not on your lap he likes to burrow under a blanket.
He's mellow, but he's not a couch potato. This pup is ready to go any time you invite him to share an adventure! Confident, fearless and trusting, he's an enthusiastic walking companion, always eager to follow his nose.
Although he's a great traveler he does bounce around a bit in the backseat in his eagerness to see ALL the things happening outside the back windows, and when he sees you're going somewhere he likes he will tell you all about how happy he is. But he knows the rules - for instance, he never jumps into the front seat without an invitation - so we can simply enjoy his enthusiasm and laugh at his antics.
With dogs his own size Papaya is very playful. He loves tug and tag, and especially enjoys a good bout of wrestling. He also enjoys balls (although he doesn't retrieve), and some toys. And he LOVES a good chew - although only on stuff that's allowed.
TRAINING
Papaya doesn't have great hearing, and yes, he's an older dog, but he is very smart, highly people-focused, motivated by both treats and praise, and eager to please. He would probably respond well to training with an e-collar set to vibrate when you want him to look at you - and he already responds to hand signals.
He responds quickly to house rules and routines, and his manners are excellent. He is reliably potty trained. Papaya hasn't been crate trained because he is well-mannered and not destructive - his previous owner never found it necessary to crate him.
He hasn't had much formal training, but he walks well on a leash - with only a little pulling when he's excited about going for a walk. His recall is excellent, so long as he sees your hand signal.
HEALTH STATUS
Papaya appears to be in good health. He has been neutered, microchipped, treated for internal parasites, and fully vaccinated.
He weighs `14 lbs, and based on his apparent age when he was first rescued we believe he was born in 2016. We've given him a birthday of March 17, 2016, which was St Patrick's Day - because whoever gets to take this cutie home will have all the luck of the Irish, and lots of laughs too, begorrah!
