Meet the Pet
This helps The Rescue Crew with pet care costs.
Hi, my name is Betty.
I lived my life mostly tied up outside. My previous family wasn't very nice to me and even thought I was a boy!! When they dropped me off at a rescue on the Pine Ridge Reservation, I was very scared and confused, but quickly realized I was in a safer place! They cut the cable off my neck, realized I'm a lady and gave me a nice name. After getting shots and spayed, I was loaded up with other rescued animals and took a long ride to Minnesota where my foster mom picked me up.
At first, I was very afraid of new people and didn't want to walk on leash or get into the car, but once I got in, I got to snuggle up with my new human foster sister and she helped calm me down. I was very excited to see that I had a dog brother waiting to meet me! I felt so much safer once I saw him and the fenced yard and immediately started playing and wagging my tail and exploring the yard. When it was time to go inside, I got scared again though. I had to walk up these things my foster mom calls "stairs." Those things are suspicious!!
I still don't like being on leash much, or being held by the collar, but I'm getting used to it. I did use the bathroom in the house at first because there's this spot that feels just like the ground outside, but foster mom calls it a "rug." Weird! She says I'm catching on fast though and I don't use the bathroom inside much anymore, unless I get really scared. I prefer when humans are sitting or laying down, they just seem scarier when they are standing. It sometimes takes me awhile to approach people, even if I REALLY want to, because hands, loud noises and sudden movements remind me of my old, scarier life.
I love treats a lot and I'm learning the difference between my toys and toys I can't have. I accidentally confused my foster sister's shoes as a toy and I could tell that did not make them happy. I really do want to make my humans happy, but houses are weird and I'm still getting used to all the rules! I do hang out in a kennel sometimes, but I much prefer to be on this thing my foster mom calls a "couch." I didn't really "get it" at first, but now I know it's just a giant dog bed! I love sitting in laps and laying on people, even though I'm a big dog.
I would love to find a patient family that can take the time to teach me all the rules of being a pet and that will understand that I sometimes make mistakes and I also need more time to warm up than most dogs. I am so grateful to be in a safe, warm and loving house! I love hanging out with the resident dog, my human roommates and I don't mind the cats in the house. I do well with respectful kids, but kids that aren't gentle or that are loud and move fast, might overwhelm me. Since I was an outside dog for so long, I really need to have my own yard to hang out in when the house gets too overwhelming.
A NOTE FROM FOSTER MOM:
Betty needs a home with a confident dog to help teach her the ropes. She also needs a fenced yard. Will consider a family with young kids if kids are well educated and gentle/calm with the dog. She'll likely need to be crated when not supervised and will need frequent potty breaks until she's more used to being in the house. Such a sweet soul and she'll make a family so so happy
