Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Kinako!
Kinako had been frequenting a neighborhood in Marin County, scavenging for food. We don't know how long she'd been on her own, but by the looks of it she wouldn't have survived long. She was emaciated with her ribs and backbone protruding, and even the muscles in her head around her face and skull were sunken in.
Over the course of several days a caring, compassionate woman who gained her trust with some warm home cooked meals, was able to coax her close enough to pet her, finally put a collar on her and get a better look at her. It was apparent Kinako had lost her right eye some time in her past.
Kinako's savior contacted the local animal welfare organization. There she would have a warm bed, regular meals and human interaction. It would also give her family a chance to come looking for her, if she was lost. Unfortunately, no one ever came for her.
We decided to take Kinako into our foster care program. She needed some TLC and many nutritious meals to get back on her feet. She is just beginning to gain a few pounds, and though it will take some time, she is filling out nicely and enjoying not having to scavenge for a small morsel.
As is typical with our noble breed, she has put her past experience on the street, behind her. She holds no grudges towards anyone and has proven to be trusting, loving, affectionate and playful with all she meets. Her loss of vision in her missing eye doesn't impede her one bit. The eyelid has been sewn shut and it gives the impression that she's winking at you, like she's sharing a special secret with you!
We'll have her remaining eye examined by a specialist to see if she has any issues with vision, either presently or in the future. From what we've observed, she doesn't appear to have any difficulty seeing with her left eye.
In a crowd, Kinako is completely in her element! She is quite the social butterfly, flirting with all those whom she thinks she can charm. We dare you to resist this beauty, as her playful demeanor is quickly contagious. She has not one iota of shame when it comes to asking for attention and tummy rubs! She has quite the magnetic personality that attracts admirers from afar.
She's very food motivated and seems to be an empty well when it comes to treats! This will make training an easy task!! She knows how to sit, down, and is learning all her other basics and she does have a habit of taking your hand or wrist gently in her mouth. She never bears down, just thinks it's how to express her excitement! She's being taught how not to share her enthusiasm in this manner! Because of this it's best she not share her home with young children.
Kinako is a girl on the move. She's active, playful and energetic. If you provide a solid foundation of leadership, quality exercise and mental stimulation, you will be rewarded with a well balanced companion. She would be a great addition to a home with someone with previous Akita experience and knows what it takes to guide and lead them with a firm yet gentle hand. We are guessing her to be between 3-4 years old. She's in her prime and has her whole life ahead of her. She's particular about other dogs, so gradual introductions may be needed if you have a resident dog. She is not a good candidate with small dogs or cats.
Her ideal person is someone that can provide some basic boundaries for her so she knows what is expected of her. Currently, Kinako thinks the world is her oyster! A firm, Akita savvy guardian is what she will need, to continue shaping her into a well rounded Akita.
