Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Matisse von Marseille is a pure black 3 year old Standard Poodle with a long list of wonderful qualities. Before we share all the amazing things about him, we need to explain that Matisse can become protective in a home. He needs an adult home with someone who knows how to adjust to a dog who needs a pack leader, so he doesn’t feel he needs to protect his people. Our trainer can work with someone willing to learn how to set boundaries for Matisse. At the rescue, he is the perfect dog. He does so well with the structure there with no hint of a problem. He is great in the play group with other dogs and avoids any problems. He is also good meeting everyone. He is so happy and charming, always ready to go out on walks with the staff and other dogs. He is perfect on the leash. In a home, he needs a more controlled environment, so he feels “responsible to you, not for you”. Matisse is super housebroken, knows his commands like "sit", "down", "paw". He can self-entertain himself with his toys and balls, especially with his favorite soccer ball. He is loving and affectionate, but needs people who don’t smother him with affection until the boundaries are set. He sleeps through the night in his crate or would be prefectly fine on a big fluffy bed next to yours. Matisse has so many great qualities and will be the perfect dog in a home with the right owner with whom he will thrive and be a model canine citizen. He is so worth the effort. He asked us to add that he has an aversion to cats, so no kitties please.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
