My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

CALM FOSTER or FOREVER HOME NEEDED ASAP!

This is Joe! He is an 90+lb, (everyone says he is a big boy) handsome Golden with an age guess of over 2 years old, who has been given a second chance at a good life! Joe who was apparently shot and left on the side of the road in a rural part of Ky, was taken to a shelter that could not care for him and they contacted GRRAND. GRRAND brought him in from the shelter and got him to the emergency vet right away. This poor guy has some skin abrasions, a fractured left front leg AND is heartworm positive, but we are happy to report he is doing well in his temporary foster home. He's such a great dog and has been so grateful for all the care he is receiving. Joe is house trained and well behaved indoors. Due to his broken leg, we have not had him with other dogs or taken him on leash walks yet.

UPDATE:

Update on Joe, our resilient 95 lb lapdog Golden

On May 2, Joe is undergoing surgery to amputate his injured leg due to a fracture caused by buckshot. After careful consideration, the surgeon determined that his leg wouldn't regain full function with surgery, and there's a risk of bone infection.

Despite the challenges, Joe is already adapting remarkably well to getting around on three legs. He's a big-hearted, loving guy who can manage a few steps on three legs. While shallow steps are easier for him, he's learning to tackle regular steps too, especially with a little assistance.

We believe Joe is eminently adoptable and will make a wonderful addition to any loving home. He'll be staying overnight at the hospital post-surgery and will return to his foster home tomorrow.

Let's send Joe lots of love and positive vibes for a smooth surgery and a speedy recovery! If you're interested in giving this resilient pup his forever home, reach out to us. Together, we can help Joe find the loving family he deserves.

Please consider adopting Joe! He needs a quiet home, without another young active dog or young kids, since he needs to remain calm as he completes heartworm treatment.

More about this rescue

Early in 1994, members of the Greater Louisville Golden Retriever Club began to see the need for an organization to rehabilitate and find homes for displaced and abused Golden Retrievers. A number of folks in this club began organizing an ad hoc rescue group. As the number of rescues increased over a period of months, this “wet behind the ears” group came up with a name and in 1996, incorporated the organization now known as Golden Retriever Rescue & Adoption of Needy Dogs (GRRAND). The rest, as they say, is history!
