Dakota is a 5 year old, 45lb long haired Husky. She was brought to the shelter as a stray by a local municipality in NC and was never reclaimed. Dakota is an easy-going and loving girl who seems to be very smart! She walks great on a leash and even sits on command. Dakota has quickly made friends with every person or dog.
Dakota has now been transferred into our care. In her prior life she suffered an injury to her hind left leg that was left to heal on its own. Given no one got her medical attention for her injury, it's no wonder she was also heartworm positive. She's now been treated for heartworms and we've had two vets confirm nothing further to be done for her leg. Dakota is extremely active so it definitely doesn't slow her down. She just doesn't have a 'show quality' gait. We do have her on joint supplements. Dakota was also badly matted and several mats had to be shaved out of her coat. A Husky should never be shaved except for medical purposes! Her coat is the type that will need constant brushing with an undercoat rake and soft brush.
Dakota would like a home with other dogs who will play with her. Or consider adopting her AND one of her friends from the sanctuary where she's being fostered. Dakota plays with everyone. She's incredibly friendly and well rounded. She even passed her cat test! Although we can never guarantee how anyone's cat will get along with her, so you should have a solid plan to supervise and give the cat appropriate escape routes if needed. She will need a fenced yard to run and play in.
Dakota is most definitely a life worth saving! She's now ready for her forever home. We can transport her for adoption. Adoption area: CT, NY, NJ, DE, PA, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA. Neighboring states are possible on a case by case basis.
~~Husky Education And Rescue Team is a foster based rescue. Our dogs are in our foster homes all up and down the east coast. We do not have a facility in which you can visit. We find this a huge benefit because we learn our dogs and are able to educate our adopters on what it’s like to have them live in your home. Part of our process, once pre-approved, is to speak with the foster for the dog you’re interested in. If you’re still interested in adopting from our rescue the first step is to complete our adoption application online at www.huskyrescueteam.org/apply
