My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Akira!

12-year-old Akira was entrusted to our care through the Final Wish Program after her previous owner was admitted to a care facility for dementia. Akira is incredibly sweet, great with other dogs, and just an all-around love bug.

Akira does not have use of her back legs with the exception of some very minor function that enables her to scoot, but not to walk or stand. Please don't let that scare you away from considering her as your new family member!

Akira is a very happy girl who gets around amazingly well with wheels, and she is strong enough to go on real walks and plays (yes, plays!) in the yard with other dogs. In fact, Akira cruised all over the Las Vegas strip while on a weekend trip with the founders of FFF!

Akira is one of the easiest paralyzed dogs we've had the privilege of caring for, and we have cared for many. As you can see in the video, it's super quick and easy to get Akira into her wheels. Please watch the other videos showing her enjoying typical dog "stuff" - going to the beach, playing with other dogs, and cruising along in Las Vegas!

We truly cannot say enough wonderful things about Akira. As far as we can tell, her only tiny fault is that she is not good with cats.

Akira has been living in an amazing Foster home since late July. During that time, with her foster mom's support, Akira became a Certified Therapy Dog! This certification was awarded following behavior and temperament evaluations and the completion of 10 hours of supervised therapy visits at places including post-acute centers, senior centers, libraries, schools, and even the DEA's office. We are grateful to Akira's foster family for investing so much time and effort to help her shine as a loving companion for her future forever family.

Her Foster Mom reports:

"Sweet, gentle, silly Akira is great with all people and particularly wonderful with children. She's also great with all dogs. Akira is one amazing girl, and we're so very proud of her. She exudes joy and is an inspiration for so many.

Akira doesn't make a peep....not a single bark, growl, or even the tiniest whine. She's not phased by fireworks, the mailman, deliveries, strangers, or grumpy dogs. She loves to cuddle and be close but is totally fine hanging on her own, too. She eats well and sleeps through the night.

After about an hour in her wheelchair, Akira gets tired and needs a break (aka long nap!) She can walk comfortably for about a mile in her wheelchair. She prefers a nice leisurely stroll over a fast paced walk. When she is at the dog park or dog beach, she will run in her wheelchair!

Akira loves water! She ran right into the waves and happily enjoyed water that went all the way up to her back. At the beach, she gladly accepted LOTS of pets and approaches from toddlers to teenagers and loved them all equally. She was unphased by toys, kites, boogie boards, running, and loud screams. Girl is bomb proof!

Inside the house, Akira also uses her chair, and we use a sling under her hips to help her move where she needs to go (mostly moving from one bed/couch to another). She can also scoot herself around when she really wants to.

Akira would do wonderfully in a home where someone is able to give her frequent potty breaks throughout the day and is patient with her pottying needs and occasional accidents. It's important that her adopter is strong enough to do wheelchair transfers, lift her back end in a sling when not using the wheelchair, and lift her completely from time to time (getting in and out of the car, getting her in the bath tub, etc.). Other than that, she's a pretty easy dog to take care of and is so even-keeled!

Akira is thriving in a home environment. I can't say it enough...Akira is a DREAM. Could you be the one to make HER dreams come true with a place to call home?"
