My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

6/12/24 Update from Matt: "Hi Everyone, I wanted to let you know I am learning to be such a good dog, and I am happy every day! My sweet Lab spirit shines through and I love everyone and all dogs I have met. My favorite things these days are walks and playtime and good puppy naps. Oh, naps on the porch in the sunshine are a favorite thing! I have outgrown those little-puppy stages of teething and chewing. Oh yes, I get the zoomies and just love my playtime with toys and balls to retrieve, and I promise to make you laugh and smile. Just watch me in my latest video playing with my ball. My dog friends in my foster home have taught me lots about being a good boy and, just like them, I wait nicely for my food bowl with no jumping up. I love hanging out and cuddling with my foster mom and I am thrilled to go with her in the car."

"So you can see I have put my sad start in life as a stray in the South behind me and I am ready to be someone's special dog. If you like Labs, especially the lovely chocolate ones, please ask to adopt me. It's taking a while to find my forever home, maybe because I am on the website with mostly Golden Retrievers waiting for homes. I promise I will love you just as much because my heart is very Golden. Please do not overlook me because I am chocolate and not golden. While I wait for my family, I have been growing into the best dog ever!"

Matt's Story: In early March, Matt was found roaming alone down South. He was very underweight and had a severe skin infection. When he was rescued, he happily wagged his tail and crawled into the laps of his favorite humans at the vet clinic.

Fast forward a few months and Matt has become a stunning young chocolate Lab mix. Like most Labs, this boy is friendly toward humans and canines alike. He loves to retrieve and play with balls and toys. These activities will help keep both Matt and his adopter physically and mentally fit. Check out this ball-playing pup's video!

Matt is in a loving foster home in VT and ready to be adopted! His foster mom shared some wonderful updates about this little darling, including that he absolutely loves playing with other dogs. He will probably be happiest in a home with another canine buddy for company or where he can have play-dates with doggy friends. His foster mom has been teaching him some basic manners. He has learned what’s okay to chew and what’s not for chewing, and to wait for his food bowl. He’s also learned about the crate and leash walking. Matt loves to cuddle and he loves his morning routine, greeting each day with plenty of puppy kisses.

At 8 months old, Chocolate Lab mix Matt will sit by your side and let you pet him to your heart's content which will make both of you feel amazing! Matt is a true puppy and his foster mom says whoever adopts him is very lucky!

Matt is neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, heartworm negative, and received a Proheart 6 injection for heartworm prevention so he will not need any additional HW preventative for 6 months.

If would like to be part of Matt's rescue story and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Cheryl to be considered to adopt this sweet, wonderful boy.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
