Benjamin and another bunny first came to the attention of Hoppy Hearts SC in late November/early December 2023 when one of our volunteers, who helps with capturing dumped bunnies, received a call about 2 dumped bunnies near a strip shopping mall in the Charlotte, NC area. The volunteer went to check out the situation and met an individual who said the bunnies were her pets and had escaped but she would catch them. The person was homeless and living in her car with the bunnies. Our volunteer came back a few days later and the person had gotten the bunnies back in her car. We offered to help with food and hay for the bunnies but she was definitely not interested. She loved the bunnies and was likely afraid we were trying to take them from her. The bunnies did appear well taken care of. Our volunteer left her card and also left a card with a business owner at the shopping mall in case needed.
Our volunteer later received a call from the business owner letting her know that the individual had been found deceased outside of her car. Our volunteer searched online to find where the bunnies had been taken and was able to find them at a local animal shelter. We were able to pull Benjamin but the other bunny was already adopted before we found out where the rabbits were.
Benjamin is being fostered by the same volunteer who took the first call. He has settled in with his foster and is beginning to relax and enjoy his new life. Benjamin is a confident bunny and is quite sassy! He is definitely an alpha bunny. Right now he is laid back and comfortable a lot of the time but still has days where he is more intense about things. He loves petting when he is relaxed and will “purr” in appreciation. We feel like Benjamin may do well with a friend as we were unable to get what may have been his bond mate from the shelter before they adopted her out and we wonder if he may be missing her. He will definitely need an experienced bunny home without children. Benjamin is a gorgeous bunny!
Benjamin has been neutered and has completed his RHDV vaccine series. He is ready for his forever family. If you are interested in adopting or fostering any of our bunnies, apply online at https://form.jotform.com/230096007721044
