My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This dashing lad is ready to embark with you on any adventures that come your way. Gonzo is 1 year and 3 months old and weighs 45 pounds. Gonzo has been in the shelter now for over 8 months! Hard to believe, but think about it, that is most of his life! Gonzo was lucky enough to attend an offsite adoption event recently and here is what the volunteer had to say about him.`I stopped by off-site today to help for a few minutes and spent some time with Gonzo. He was initially a bit nervous, and tail-tucked, but still calm and tolerant of people and other dogs. He stayed very close to his handler. After a while he came out of his shell and was going up to anyone nearby. He was completely non-reactive to other dogs. He did not even react to a couple of teens who just came up and quickly scratched his head with no caution on their part. He sits for treats, although will grab for them if he gets the chance. Not snappy though.

Gonzo’s adoption fee has been waived. He is neutered and microchipped and has age-appropriate vaccinations. A licensing/microchip fee may apply. Gonzo is currently resting in foster. If you are interested in meeting Gonzo, please contact New Hope at newhope@sfhumanesociety.org Thank you!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

If you have made the careful decision to bring a companion animal into your life, chances are that SFAS&HS has a dog, cat, kitten, puppy, ferret, rabbit, guinea pig, or other fuzzy critter that will match your home and lifestyle.

Matchmaking is an important part of our adoption process, and we pride ourselves on helping hopeful animal lovers find a companion that will fit their lifestyle. Think about how much time you have to spend with a new animal. Think about the time involved: a healthy puppy can live for 15 to 20 years! Remember that settling in a new four-legged family member can take some time and adjustment. Bear in mind that just like us, your companion animal will need food and supplies and have to visit a doctor from time to time.

We invite you to visit our animals in the shelter, at our satellite adoption facility inside PetsMart (3561 Zafarano Drive) or online.Once you have an idea what you’re looking for, one of our adoption counselors will visit with you and share some ideas about which of our residents would be best suited to you.

All animals are spayed or neutered before leaving and receive the required age-appropriate vaccines. The required licenses for city and county residents are available at the shelter as you adopt!

Adoption is a partnership between the adopter, the shelter and the animal. We are committed to making that partnership work for everyone.

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society is the largest animal shelter and care facility in northern New Mexico. More than 6,000 lost, stray, abandoned or injured animals come through our doors each year. As a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we receive nearly all of our funding through private donors in our community and beyond. SFAS&HS contracts with the city and county of Santa Fe to care for homeless and stray animals, as well as those brought through our front doors.

We work to reunite people with their lost animal companions, and re-home those animals that have gone unclaimed into new homes through our adoption program. Low- and no-cost spay/neuter programs address the overpopulation problems that our community faces. Humane education programs in our local schools teach children to respect and care for all living creatures. Partnered with our community, we work for change in the lives of our companion animals and to end the suffering of all animals.
