Our amazing Toby is getting braver by the day which thrills us to no end!
Toby was a discarded hunting dog from NC - he has lived outside his whole life and is very cautious about new things. Hence, with his apartment, he is afraid to actually go inside (where he would have AC or heat).
With the aid of a camera in his run, we are able to see what his comfort level is and, as we adjust to meet him where he is comfortable, he is becoming more and more eager to try new things! Like going in his room!
Or like his pool - most cautious dogs would maybe try and just drink from the pool, or just avoid it, but Toby has decided it is the perfect place to lounge during these hot days!
Toby is a little cautious with new people but give him just a second and he will love you forever! He will seek you out and put his darling face right next to your hands so you can pet him. And you won't want to stop!
Toby is just two-years-old but was heartworm positive when he came to us. The good news is that he has completed his treatment and is on his way to a happy and healthy life - he just needs his new home!

If all goes well and you decide to pursue adoption, you will be asked to complete a pre-adopt. Once your family, including any dogs, have also met with the dog you wish to adopt, your application will be submitted to the Adoption Committee for review. We estimate the pre-adoption process can take up to 14 days or longer.
Please note: AAS is committed to finding the best fit for each of our dogs. For this reason, we will accept multiple applications for a dog. In the case of multiple applications, we will select the applicant that is the best fit based on the needs of the dog.
Adoption fee for puppy/adult dogs is $300.00.
Adoption fee for senior dogs is $150.00.
Dogs qualify as a senior based on their stature/weight and age. The scale below shows the age at which a dog attains “senior” designation:
0-20 lbs: 11 years
21-50: 10 years
51-90: 8 years
91+: 7 years

The purpose of the Society shall be to provide to/and or for animals, other than man, shelter, medical aid, care and protection, to act as a placement agency for animals in good health, and to provide education for the humane care and treatment of animals, and to attempt to prevent cruelty to animals. We are a nonprofit organization that receives no funding from state or federal agencies. All of the funds required to maintain the shelter and care for the dogs come from donations and special fund-raising events. Donations to the shelter are tax deductible.
Our dogs are not euthanized for space. This means that new dogs can only be accepted by the shelter when we have an available kennel.

Receive medical care as needed
Current on vaccinations
Spayed or neutered
Regularly walked and exercised
Socialized and loved
Temperament tested
Microchipped
