Here's what the humans have to say about me:
**HUGH HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!** Hugh, our resident cool dude, is currently accepting applications for his forever home. This guy is an absolute gem, and we encourage anyone looking for a practically perfect dog to submit their application today! Hugh found his way to Pal's Place from an overburdened animal control facility in Kentucky. His breed and past are unknown but we suspect he's a combination of many breeds, a true super mutt! Cur, Shepherd, Boxer, Lab, Shar-Pei, and more all possible ancestors in his lineage. His exact age is also a mystery; there's some mileage on him, as evidenced by his distinguished gray beard and a wiseness in his demeanor and eyes usually reserved for dogs that have been around for several years. At the same time, he is still playful and spry without being hyper or wild and maintains a bit of a mischievous twinkle in his eye. Our best estimate for age is somewhere between 7-9 years. Hugh is the kind of dog we think will fit in most households easily and will make a great companion for a family looking for a dog that is still active, playful, and fun-loving but one that is past the puppy shenanigans, has some training, and also knows when and how to hang out and relax. An added bonus to his stellar personality is his size; just under 50 pounds; he's a medium-sized pooch, ideal for urban dwellings. Hugh is a confident, friendly dog who loves people and greets everyone with a smile on his face and abundant tail wags. He's got great house manners as well. Quiet, housebroken, crate-trained, not destructive or anxious when alone, walks nicely on leash, friendly with other dogs. What more could you possibly want in a dog?! You've probably noticed the cloudiness in his eyes and may be thinking of cataracts, but most clouding is scarring from ulcers left untreated until Hugh found his way to us. A veterinary ophthalmologist in Chicago diagnosed Hugh with indolent ulcers in both eyes, and they suspected he had been dealing with them for many months without treatment, causing some damage and scarring to the lenses of his eyes. He had a dremel debridement procedure when he first came to the rescue and completed a month-long course of eye medications to facilitate the healing of the ulcers. The ophthalmologist also noted nuclear sclerosis in both eyes, which is clouding or haziness often seen in the eyes of middle-aged to senior dogs resulting from the normal aging process of the eye. The doctor also noted a small insipient cataract in his right eye in the lower corner. Despite these three different diagnoses, the doctor was confident that his vision had not been impacted in a significant way and did not expect any progression to cause a significant loss of vision later in life. Hugh's behavior also shows no signs of vision impairment, but despite the ulcers now being healed, the scars will remain, and his eyes will always appear very cloudy. Hugh was recently neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested (negative) and microchipped. With his clean bill of health, he's ready for his next chapter: a forever home of his own!
Hugh's adoption fee to the rescue is $375. He is in a foster home on Chicago's north side and can be seen by appointment only after an application has been received and approved. For more info or an application, please email palsplace1@hotmail.com or visit palsplacerescue.org. Unfortunately, we cannot place holds on our dogs for any reason. Please do not submit an adoption application unless you are ready to meet and welcome a dog into your home within three days of applying. Adoption applications and correspondence from the rescue may end up in your spam or junk folder. If you are waiting for our reply, please check those folders regularly, and if it has been 48 hours without a reply, please follow up with an email to ensure your application was received.
• Hugh's adoption fee is $375. This fee covers any necessary medical care to prepare him for adoption. Pal's Place relies solely on adoption fees and donations to care for the animals in our rescue. Your donation also helps save other dogs like Hugh from euthanasia.
