Athena- in foster!

Update 10/12/2024: Athena came out to an adoption event at Tractor Supply today (her first event!) and had a great time meeting lots of people, including many children, who stopped to see this striking girl. With her creamy/white coat and beautiful tan eyes, she is absolutely gorgeous. Athena impressed everyone with her calmness (although her foster mom reports that she can definitely get the zoomies at home!), her tricks (sit, shake, etc.), and her friendliness with everyone she met. Although she does very well at home with dogs and cats she knows, she didn't love other rambunctious shelter pups that she didn't know getting closer to her during the day (understandable!). To her credit, she was perfectly calm around everyone - even the most frenetic - as long as they gave her some space. As she currently lives with two other dogs, we're confident that she'll be fine with proper introductions as she is very playful and engaging with her foster siblings at home. Unfortunately, a busy adoption event at Tractor Supply is not the best time to introduce new pups to each other! If you would like to meet Athena - maybe do a meet-and-greet with your own pups, if you have any - contact the shelter so that they can set up an appointment for you with her foster mom! Don't miss the chance to take this dream dod home! She's already housetrained, lives well with other animals, and is ready to go home with you!

Athena is enjoying life in a wonderful foster home! Here's an update from her foster mom:

Athena was found in February 2024 literally in the road on Hwy 22 in Lexington. I initially thought she was alone, but she took me to her sister Georgia who was hiding in the tree line. They were fostered with my family, and while Georgia was adopted in April, Athena for some reason hasn't received any interest, and we don't know why!

So far we've discovered she's ok around infants, she's curious and will give them the sniff and lick test before deciding they are boring and moving on. She loves to play outside with kids and has been exposed to kids ages 2-10 as well as tweens and teens, but she's shy around new adults. She is still pretty rambunctious, which can be overwhelming for the smaller kids at times. She's still learning about boundaries.

She loves hunting for bugs, and cicada season is her favorite season. She loves to watch for squirrels and bark out a warning, but so far they've proven to be elusive when she gets outside. She chases the neighbor's chickens when they get into the yard and although she hasn't harmed them several are missing their tail feathers 😬 So far she seems to do well with one of our cats, the one that's not scared of her and will be in the same room with her. She's finally started to not be as forward and in your face with her. She seems to want to play with her like she would a dog and doesn't realize the cat is smaller.

She gets along well with our 2 senior dogs, but they are old and grumpy, so she doesn't get to play with them as much as she would like. She is housebroken and kennel/crate trained and will go in sometimes on her own. She goes in with the "go to bed" command. She walks on the leash very well and loves walks and sniffing new things. She's learned "sit, down, shake" and we're working on "stay". She is still in her chewing phase, so you'll definitely want to make sure she has lots of appropriate chew toys. She is a power chewer, so she will need super sturdy toys. Her favorite treats are frozen berries, watermelon, cantaloupe and bananas.

Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter is a non-profit shelter serving over 720 square miles. We are open intake, meaning we can not turn away animals from either county we serve. Viewing and adoption hours at our shelter are Wednesday through Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM.
All adoption fees include age-appropriate vaccinations, flea treatment, deworming, and spay or neuter, microchip, and adoption packet.
Fees:
Dogs over 6 months old: $100
Puppies under 6 months: $200.
Cats and Kittens are $75 ($65 without microchip).
