Here's what the humans have to say about me:
He's a happy, friendly fellow whose favorite place is at your feet with his head in your lap. He bounces with joy when you bring out the leash, and he flops at your feet with a sigh of contentment when you sit down to work or relax, and really there isn't anything that makes Wilson anything other than happy to be alive.
HISTORY
His first owner wanted to train him as a service dog, but despite his best efforts to please her, he wasn't up for the job. He met his current caregiver at an adoption event in Eastern Oregon about six years ago, and he's had a good and happy life with her. But now she needs to downsize, and she's asked HART to help find him his final, really-=truly-forever home.
SOCIALIZATION
This boy never met a stranger. He loves everybody - he's not pushy, but he's happy to accept pets wherever they're offered. However, he really REALLY loves men. In a perfect world, Wilson would be the best friend and companion of a laid-back older guy.
He currently lives with a mixed pack of dogs, from large to tiny, and gets on well with all of them. He's also friendly and respectful with dogs he doesn't know.
He hasn't lived with cats, and he barks at the feral cats that pass his yard. We'd expect him to be fine sharing a home with a confident, dog-savvy cat, but we'll test him if need be to make sure.
There are ducks and chickens in his current home, and Wilson is trained to ignore them.
GENERAL TEMPERAMENT & BEHAVIOR
Wilson has the classic Labrador temperament - kind, loving, happy, and a bit goofy. He's not needy or pushy, but he loves to be petted and he's happiest just hanging out with his special person.
He's a bit of a couch potato ... well, full disclosure, he's a bit of a fatty, and not very fit, so a hiking or jogging companion he cannot be. But he LOVES going for walks. At the moment he's good for a casual stroll around the neighborhood, and if it happens to end at a coffee shop where he might encounter a puppy whip and a new friend, so much the better. Given a regular routine of gentle, consistent exercise (and not too many puppy whips) he'll probably handle a couple miles of easy hiking terrain - and love the experience! And he loves car rides, so taking him to new places to walk would be fun too!
When not out for a walk, Wilson is content to snooze the day away, perhaps with a nice juicy beef bone to keep things interesting. He's not really one for toys, although he may toss a ball around for fun (he doesn't retrieve - sorry - that would be your job). If you have a sprinkler out to water your lawn he may play with it, but otherwise he's not a big fan of water.
The one thing that stops Wilson's happies is loud bangs. He doesn't act stupid or crazy, but he's miserable over New Year and the Fourth of July - so if you like to spend your weekends shooting, he is probably not a fit for you.
TRAINING
Wilson's house manners are excellent. He's reliably house-trained, and has no bad habits. He's calm and quiet, and rarely barks except at feral cats, the lawn mower and the vacuum cleaner. He doesn't dig or try to escape.
He doesn't like the crate - we suspect he spent too much time in one back when he was a young dog in training - but he's so good that crating him is really not necessary.
His recall is good and he walks very well on leash, with no pulling. Beyond that, he's probably not a candidate for serious training - but if you'll just love him (and offer the occasional treat) he'll soon learn everything he needs to know about your rules, routines and expectations for living in your home.
HEALTH STATUS
Wilson has been neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites, and microchipped. His estimated date of birth is February 12, 2016. He is very overweight - he should weigh around 60 lbs - but he's currently on a controlled diet and is slimming down nicely. Apart from that he appears to be healthy. Full vet records will be provided to his adopter.
ADOPTION INFORMATION
