My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sweet boy Abe was adopted from AAC four years ago but found himself back at the shelter after his family had to move and could not take him. His family provided the following notes: He is very friendly and loves people. He does well with children 5+, loves a good walk or run around the yard but will gladly chill with you on the couch if that`s more your speed. He is crate trained with the command `bedtime`. He does well with female dogs but can be reactive/anxious around other males. He has a prey drive so a home with cats or other small animals is not recommended.

Abe is housetrained and lived with another dog in his previous home. During his last shelter stay he was noted as very friendly, easy to leash, a gentle treat taker, and a lover of all the pets and affection. Basically the entire package. If you are looking for a dog who really has it all, come by and meet Abe!

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note, Adoption and Pet Resource Center lines close at 6:00 p.m. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.
