My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Pretty-in-pink is SAMMY, a cattle dog, who has been on the flighty-side since coming to the shelter. She just found a new foster home and they are determined to help her become more social, and fit in more easily to a household. This is something new for us, with the new foster caregiver in the Blacksburg area, outside our local friends. Nothing wrong with opening up new doors, and trying new things, and we think Sammy will agree that life can be very exciting on a college campus!Good luck, Sammy, keep searching for that new home. And if anyone is interested in adopting, she is available!

********

Sammy is a tiny female cattle dog, spayed, and super with other dogs! She doesn’t care if they are bigger than she is, if they are male or female, or what color or breed they are. She just likes being around other dogs. She has also proven that she can live with cats in a cat-friendly environment. Sammy’s foster mom has seen great progress since taking her in a couple months ago. Sammy loves hanging out with the other cattle dog in the home, “Old Man” Hale, a standard size cattle dog who has been in our care for a year now.

Sammy is a six year old “mini” sized Australian cattle dog whose uneventful life was filled with producing puppies, litter after litter, in an outdoor kennel area.  Sammy will need a physically fenced area, (no invisible fences for her!)  and she will benefit from another nice dog, on the smaller side rather than large. She has finally accepted both female dogs and male dogs, huge progress for her! And she wants a dog that is not going to be in her face or jumping all over her. That’s not too much to ask, is it? Sammy has been spayed, and has recovered nicely. We don’t know that she has any working dog instinct, since she was a puppy producer for her life. She did meet the shelter cat and was interested with no attempt to chase or eat him, which we think is promising! Sammy weighs about 30 pounds, is heartworm negative, and his current with vaccines. She is trying hard to be house trained! Because she was an outdoor dog before coming to the shelter, pottying outdoors is only natural. She has overcome being handshy and we worked hard to give her plenty of time to become comfortable with her new people.  To adopt, start with an application from our website: friendsofcampbellcounty.org.

Sammy was brought to the shelter with two other friends from her family home. She lived with other dogs, and is a little stressed being at the shelter in a kennel run, since she was an outdoor dog at her first home. If you have patience and are willing to spend time with this little girl, teaching her to walk on a leash and get used to a collar, it might work really well for you! She is not going to be a dog that you can take home and have a best-friend companion immediately, because she has not been well socialized with new people or new situations in a house. We look forward to getting to know her better.

Additional adoption info

We start with an application so our volunteers and fosters can have an idea of what the adopter is seeking. We ask that other pets in the home be spayed/neutered already if of appropriate age, current with rabies shots, and prefer use of heartworm preventive. We ask for a non-family personal reference as well as a vet reference to contact. We do home visits only if we feel it is vital to the pet's successful placement.

Applications are generally processed within 24 to 48 hours. Foster parents will contact the applicants to advise them of the progress of their application and to set up a meet and greet. Because volunteers work full-time jobs, contact is often made by email.

Fees to adopt range from $20 to $80 for cats, and from $75 to $300 for dogs. A contract requires that the adopter contact FOAC and return the pet to our care at any time if the adoption does not work out.

Go meet their pets

FOAC vaccinates and deworms the dogs and cats at the Campbell County Shelter, which is open to the public from 12 to 5 weekdays and 11 to 4 on Saturdays. That address is 322 Dennis Riddle Drive, Rustburg, VA (behind Yellow Branch Elementary School.)

Available by appointment for visits are the dogs and cats noted as being in "foster care." We also visit Petsmart in Lynchburg, VA, with our adoptable dogs and cats at various times.

More about this rescue

Established in 2011. FOAC filled the vacancy left by the local humane society when they ended their association with Campbell County Animal Control. FOAC became its own entity in 2012 and has grown to 300 volunteers. We work in partnership with Campbell County Animal Control, and as their guests at the shelter. We do not have our own shelter nor overhead expenses, and no paid employees.
