My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This boy is such a gentle soul! All he asks out of life is a comfy corner of the couch, maybe a patch of sun to lie in now and then, casual walks in places with interesting smells, space to run the occasional zoomie, and someone who loves him - and for that he's willing to trade his whole heart.

HISTORY
Kane was born on January 27th, 2014. According to the person who bred him he is a purebred rednose pit bull. He was adopted as a puppy by a young man in his early 20s.

About a year ago Kane's owner abandoned him with his ex-girlfriend. She already has her own dog - Kane's son - and, as a single parent, she doesn't have the resources or the bandwidth to provide for him. She's asked HART to find him a home with people who can meet his needs and love him for whatever time he has left.

SOCIALIZATION
Kane is affectionate and bouncy with his special people, gentle with children (he shares his home with a toddler), and good with other dogs he knows. When he meets new humans he is calm, polite and friendly. With new dogs he can be a little pushy - he REALLY wants to play - but with a proper introduction he is respectful and friendly. He is not safe with cats.

TEMPERAMENT & GENERAL BEHAVIOR
Before anything else, he's a snuggler. His favorite place is wherever his hooman is at - preferably cuddled up close, under a blanket, on a bed or couch.

But he is not exclusively a couch potato! Kane's dream home has a yard big enough for zoomies, and he'd love to share it with a friendly canine playmate who isn't fazed by hard-driving bully scrambles. At 10 years old Kane has slowed down - he plays quite hard but only for a little while, and then he's ready for a nap.

Kane is usually calm, but he's an alert watchdog who will bark a warning if he hears an intruder. He copes fine with being left alone while his caregiver is away from their apartment.

He loves going for walks - Kane would be a great companion for casual hikes or strolls around your neighborhood. He enjoys car rides - he can get a little over-excited trying to watch EVERYTHING passing by all at once, but he will eventually settle down. He waits patiently if left in the car alone.

He's not big on toys - squeakers and stuffies leave him cold - but he loves a good chew. (And yes, he knows the difference between his chew stuff and your non-chew stuff!) When he was younger he enjoyed games of fetch and tug, but since moving to an apartment he hasn't had many opportunities for off-leash outdoor play. We're guessing he might enjoy starting up with that again!

TRAINING
Kane is reliably house-trained and doesn't mark indoors. He's crate trained, and is comfortable in a crate.

His house manners are fair. When he gets excited he may jump up on you (he listens when told to get down), and he needs to be reminded to wait instead of barreling through the door. But he's not destructive, and he doesn't have any other bad habits.

Kane is comfortable on a leash, although he may pull at the beginning of a walk because there is SO much that's demanding the attention of his nose! His recall is good. He knows the basic commands - sit, down, stay - and responds fairly well. He'd probably benefit from a refresher training course just to remind him of what you expect in the way of manners.

HEALTH STATUS
Kane has been neutered, microchipped and dewormed, and is up to date on all shots. He weighs about 60 lbs.

Kane has some significant health needs, which can be managed but require a vet visit every four to six weeks, a special diet, and daily medications.
- He has allergies that make him very uncomfortable and itchy. These are managed by means of a controlled diet (no chicken or corn, please!) and his current vet has him on cytopoint shots every four to six weeks.
- He needs to have his anal glands expressed about monthly, or they impact and erupt.
- He recently developed an ocular autoimmune condition, for which the vet says he will need Optimmune Ophthalmic, probably for the rest of his life.
- Like most old dogs he has some lumps and bumps, and it's possible that a couple of these may be potentially of concern. At this stage they don't appear to cause him any discomfort.

The cost of his medications runs around $125/month, and they are essential to his wellbeing. Because Kane needs an adopter who is willing and able to make a long-term, ongoing financial commitment to meeting this need, there is no adoption fee for this boy. We just want to know he's safe, loved and cared for.

ADOPTION INFORMATION
Kane is in foster care in a private home in Pasco, and will be available to meet you after your adoption application has been approved. Please email HearthfireART@gmail.com to request an adoption application form.
