My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Coco!

Coco wandering the streets on 7/25/23 in horrible condition. She was not chipped and even though she was wearing a collar with her name, no owners were located.

Her tag said her name was Coco, but I think Sophia fits her better. She reminds me of an elderly, grumpy, outspoken, judgmental, gray-haired great-grandmother. She tolerates other dogs and cats, but may give them a growl if they are in her bed.

Not only that, but she only wants to use a potty pad, no matter how long she stays outside. Not only that, but she will come into the house and walk directly to the pad while smirking at you the entire time, but she does only go on the pad.

Coco is a picky eater. It has been quiet since the struggle to get her to eat dog food. It’s obvious that she was used to eating table scraps. She will eat dog food, but she will give you disdainful glances the entire time. The only time I really see her excited is when she smells food cooking. Watch out if she smells bacon, you will see heel nipping and happy dancing.

Other than that, she is extremely calm and quiet. If it gets a little too loud, expect her to find some place private to take a nap. She does not have any issues with separation anxiety, resource guarding or chewing.

During her in initial exam when she came into care, we discovered that she has luxating patella’s (dislocated kneecaps) in both her back legs. This condition is inherited, and toy poodles are especially susceptible. While this could have been treated when she was a puppy, options at this time are limited. She is on a daily, inexpensive medication for joint pain. She does limp and at times holds one of her legs up. She can go up and down stairs (with a running start) but she cannot jump, so your furniture is safe.

She had severe dental issues and has had a cleaning and 6 teeth removed. She also came in suffering with skin problems caused by fleas. This has been treated, but she has some thinning of her fur in certain areas.

During the blood work for her dental, it was noted that her calcium level was extremely high. After additional testing, a small tumor was on her thyroid gland. This was surgically removed and follow-up testing revealed that her calcium levels had returned to normal and no follow-up treatment was required.

Coco would well in a quiet home. If you are comfortable with her using a potty pad, a yard is not required. She does not need to be walked because of her back legs, but will love to cuddle with you on the couch, so couch potatoes will work for her. She will need regular grooming and to continue her medication.
