Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Scarlett was surrendered to the rescue with 5 other dogs, who we will also be vetting in the coming weeks. Her owner was having health issues and was elderly. He was not able to care for the dogs properly any longer and wanted them to have better lives with someone who could. Scarlett and the other dogs were pretty much confined to one room and really only saw the older gentleman. They are friendly once they feel comfortable but can be skittish and nippy initially with new people. Scarlett is fearful and undersocialized. She is standiffish and growls at anyone who approaches her but we believe it's due to fear. Scarlett has shown a tendency to be nippy and for this reason, it is best if she goes to an adult only home, which is what she is used to. We feel that she will come around once she feels comfortable. Without proper social skills, a dog does not know how to react to new situations, people, environments and will, sometimes, lash out in what appears to be aggression. Time and patience usually works to develop trust and to calm the dog and help them to feel safe. We feel this is all Scarlett will need to become a wonderful companion. We do recommend social outings to expose her to new situations and to improve her social skills and responses to new things. Scarlett looks to be a dachshund mix is about 3 1/2 years old. She has done well with other dogs and we feel like she would probably also be fine in a home with cats. Scarlett just wants to live a spoiled dogs life where she can (eventually) soak up someone's love and attention and she deserves that.
Scarlett saw the vet on 2/7/24. She did test negative for heartworms. She has been started on Simparica Trio for monthly heartworm prevention/flea control. She did test negative also on her fecal. The vet noted that Scarlett has superficial corneal ulcers so she was given a Convenia injection as the best option to treat. Vet recommended eye drops but was afraid that we would not be able to administer them given Scarlett's fearful nature. Scarlett also has moderate to severe dental disease and should receive a dental at some point. This is a common issue in small dogs and is,most likely, the result of a poor diet, given her young age. Scarlett weighed 15 pounds as of 2/7/24. Scarlett is ready to have a good life!
If interested in giving Scarlett her forever home, please submit your interest and your adoption application via email or text ONLY to 352-215-3260 (phone calls will not be answered or returned from this number). Scarlett's adoption fee will be $250 to help cover the cost of her vetting and daily care while with us. We will only consider applicants who complete the adoption application and will determine whether the applicant would be a good fit for Scarlett based on the info provided in the application. If we feel that you will be a good match for her, we will set up a meet and greet appointment with you.
