My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Augie, a nearly 3-year-old pit mix with an irresistible personality and a heart as big as his energy level! This happy-go-lucky boy has been with us on and off since June 2022, each time returning with a smile and his signature wagging tail. Augie's enthusiasm for life is contagious-he loves everyone he meets and greets people with warmth and a big grin. Playful and affectionate, Augie is a natural people-lover and a snuggler at heart. You couldn't ask for a better companion.

While his heart of gold has won many over, Augie's high energy has been a challenge for previous adopters. He has more pep than most people know what to do with! But that's no obstacle for the right family-he just needs an active, structured lifestyle to bring out his best. Augie recently graduated from the Puppies for Parole program at Jeff City Correctional Center, where he passed his mock Canine Good Citizen test with flying colors. His handler raved about his trainability, noting that he thrived on the daily structure of 5-mile runs and a consistent routine. Augie's energy didn't fade after those miles, though, so he's looking for a home that's ready to show up for him every single day. Willing to put in the work that he is.

A fenced yard would be ideal for Augie to burn off some of his energy, whether you're throwing a ball or playing with him outside. Although he enjoys the company of other dogs, he'd be happiest either as the only dog or with a canine sibling who shares his high energy level. He's highly trainable. He picks up new skill very quickly. He's proven time and again that with the right direction, he's a fabulous companion who will reward structure with loyalty, playfulness, and love.

Augie needs a committed owner who will make him a part of their daily routine, keeping him active and giving him the attention and direction he thrives on. If you're an active person or family ready to embrace this incredible, joyful dog, Augie is here waiting to share his boundless energy-and his boundless heart-with you. His adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous donor.

More about this shelter

Dogwood Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter.

Since its infancy, compassionate, like-minded volunteers have been the driving force behind Dogwood Animal Shelter. Through auctions and sales, a handful of dedicated people raised enough money to build its first, albeit small facility and was established as a 501(c) 3 in 1976. It was filled beyond capacity almost immediately.

The shelter is funded entirely from donations and proceeds from their Dogwood Animal Shelter Thrift Store.

After years of saving, planning and busting at the seams with fur-babies, in 2005 it was time to build a new facility with their own in-house clinic! Under the direction of Dr. John Reinhold and coupled with a very dedicated and gifted team of Veterinarians and staff, Dogwood Animal Shelter continues to offer low cost spays and neuters to the public as well as services to their shelter buddies; services to approximately 2,000 dogs and cats yearly!

Dogwood Animal Shelter began their journey of being a successful no-kill shelter in 1997, and since then has saved over 40,000 lives!
