This regal looking fellow is Nigel. He weighs around 13 pounds. We think he may be a long hair chihuahua /
terrier mix with possibly a little dachshund thrown in. Nigel came to our rescue as a stray and Animal Services estimated his age at about 8 years. He seems younger and may be closer to 5-6 years. His silky tail and ears suggest his coat may grow in longer.
Nigel is a moderate energy boy. He loves going for walks on his leash. After his initial excitement, he is calm for the rest of the walk, although he does love trying to chase squirrels. A redirection the opposite way is usually all he needs to get back to walking calmly. He is cautious when meeting people outside. He may bark initially but then warms up after a few minutes. Nigel makes a great walking companion when the weather is right. He can easily walk about 2 miles. However he does not like rain and does NOT like to get wet!
Indoors Nigel is crate trained and is completely house trained. Nigel has shown no destructive behaviors like chewing or digging. He gets along well with his foster siblings who are in the 5-pound range. Nigel sleeps quietly in bed with his family, and he would like very much for his forever family to let him continue this practice. Nigel loves stuffed toys, plays tug with his humans, and even knows how to fetch and bring his tennis ball back for another round. In the house he might amuse himself by shaking his stuffed toys and growling, but he is not being aggressive – he is just playing.
Nigel’s ideal family is one who wants a moderate energy dog for long walks. A securely fenced yard would be great, but not required if Nigel is taken on several brisk walks daily. Nigel would love another dog his size and energy to play with. He’s around only adults in his foster home, but we suspect he would do great with older/respectful children who want to join in Nigel’s play and care. Nigel is not a big barker, but he does alert with a loud "big dog" bark when he hears a noise, so apartment or condo living would not be a good fit for him. He also has not been around cats while with our rescue.
