Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Scruffy McDuffy's backstory:
Though stray animals are not prevalent here in New York like they are in other states (thank goodness), it still happens. Mr. McDuffy is one such lad. He was found on the side of the road by Good Samaritans and taken into a local animal control facility. Unfortunately, no one came forward to claim him as their boy. No microchip, and he was out on his own not neutered. The facility was overcapacity and euthanizing because they did not have space. Our volunteers here at Animal Saints took him in when we got the call about his plight and life about to be cut far too short. We are honoured to give him this second chance at life!
Breed and Hair Notes:
Mr. McDuffy has hair that grows and not fur. He is a stunning blend of Shih Tzu. Maybe some Lhasa Apso? Maltese? DNA companies would enjoy this one. He is one-of-a-kind and very special. He is agreeable to baths at home, and he was well-behaved at the professional groomer. PLEASE NOTE: his hair will grow indefinitely, and he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care.
Get to Know Mr. McDuffy:
He is approximately 1-2 years old and about 15 pounds. This is an estimate from the veterinarian who did his cherry eye surgery and neuter. He is so young and his teeth were so clean that he did not need a dental! He is a healthy and young boy, ready to live a life full of energy and love. He did have what is called a cherry eye surgery to put a gland in his eye firmly into place. We had this done while he was being neutered as a convenience since he was already under anesthesia for the neuter. Sometimes, younger dogs (Shih Tzu and Lhasa are prone to them) have weaker fibers in their connective tissue, and sometimes it slides up onto the eye. When he came back to our foster family from the hospital, it popped back out just a bit. It can stay like this for the remainder of his life. It is not life-threatening, nor is it a medical emergency. The gland can sometimes eventually go back into place through massaging it. Eyedrops sometimes help, too.
Mr. McDuffy is described as an exuberant boy full of love and playfulness. He just wants to be loved. That's it! Well, that and walks. He loves a good walk.
Ideal Home:
Mr. McDuffy is young and full of life. He needs some basic guidance on how to be a proper gentleman, and professional training sessions are required with his adoption. A family with older children who understand boundaries is a good idea. A family who is home a lot is also ideal. He should NOT be left alone by himself for many hours a day. He needs guidance, and he needs his people around him the majority of the time.
If you expect to put Mr. McDuffy in a crate at all during the day or night, please do not apply. He will flourish in a home where he can hang out with his people during the day and sleep near them at night.
Mr. McDuffy can successfully be in a home where he is the only dog, though he lives in a foster home with several other male dogs his size.
Mr. McDuffy is a young dog with hopefully a very long life ahead of him. He's beyond the frenetic puppy years but still has some good and playful energy. He's ready to carpe diem! Hopefully, he will be able to do that soon with the ideal family by his side!
