Meet Sofie! This regal beauty was surrendered to BARCS when her owner moved away. She was pretty unhappy with the noise and commotion at the shelter, so a member of our kennel staff took her into foster. While her adjustment has been slow, living in a quiet home has tremendously approved her outlook on the world. She now runs to the door to greet her foster mom, chirping, purring and rubbing on her legs. No hiding for this girl-her interests include surveying the world from her window perch, chasing wand toys, sleeping on her heating pad, eating Temptations and shredded canned food (duck in particular), and engaging in midnight zoomies.
Losing her old life was a traumatic experience, so Sofie is still learning how to navigate interactions with new people; she sometimes gets overwhelmed, and needs space and time to herself. However, she's made considerable progress over the last month. She's gone from hissing at her foster mom just for entering the room to being a part-time lapcat who LOVES head and chin scratches! She's an independent girl, so after she's had her fill of affection, she's content to hang out cuddled against your leg (no pets at this time!), or just somewhere near you, observing your activities from her fuzzy bed.
Sofie is a particular princess who will require lots of love, patience, and feline know-how, so she would do best in a calm home with no young children. She doesn't like dogs, and probably wouldn't appreciate sharing her space with another cat, either-she wants all of your attention to herself. Given the chance to decompress and develop a bond of trust, she'll make a perfectly loving companion for an experienced cat owner, one who can respect her boundaries and give her the pampering she knows she deserves. She's just a perfect cat looking for her perfect person!

Step 2: Visit our shelter during adoption hours (Monday-Friday 2-6 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). When you arrive, you will first be asked to fill out our Shelter Adoption Application with your information. You may also pre-fill our Shelter Adoption Application ahead of time online to save time when you are at the shelter. Your application will be processed after you meet the animal.
Step 3: Tour our adoption rooms and write down the names of animals that you would like to meet. A volunteer or staff member will help you meet your chosen animals to make a match!
Step 4: When you have selected the right animal for you, our Adoptions Team will run your Adoption Application for approval. Once your application is approved, you will participate in an adoption class where you will learn all of the details about your new adopted family member, including their known history and medical records.
What else to expect: Animals who are already spayed/neutered and past their stray hold (if applicable) can often go home with you the same day. Pick-up arrangements for unaltered animals and/or animals still on a stray hold will be made during your adoption class.
