Aloha! I’m Artie, a 1-year-old hound mix ready to share my love and joy with you! Read below a memo from Artie`s Foster Mama!
`I ?Had the pleasure of fostering Artie for 8 days. When not in the high stress environment of the shelter he is a completely different dog. Was told it takes 3 days for them to detox from the environment and start to heal, this was so true. Chose him because besides his perfect markings and beauty, he has such a big happy presence, a great unbroken spirit and is SO intelligent. Each day he became significantly more affectionate and calm and learned things so quickly, picked up tricks from my dog, also very food oriented so he’s easy to train. His pulling on the leash changed to in pace with me. He started playing more, his puppy nibbles turned into licks, and coming for pets. He is so loyal if you let him off the leash outside he stays with you. He ONLY barks once or twice to warn you and is quiet most of the time which I liked. He can sit, pee on cue if asked, if you say Artie and clap twice he comes, he does his best not to “go wees” in a kennel or room but needs to be let outside consistently to do that until adjusted. He will chase chickens, he is good with other dogs but still getting socialized so on leash with them at first. He needs exercise, been in a cage his entire life. Once he’s had a walk he’s gold. He loves car rides pets and digging in sand, and all the every food. He will gaze into your soul, lie on your lap and forever hold a place in your heart if given the chance. Infinite potential lies with this one, give him the chance.`
Schedule a meet and greet today or come by anytime from 12 PM to 4 PM (except Thursdays). Let’s create beautiful memories filled with wagging tails, sunny days, and lots of fun together!

More about this shelter
The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.
The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.
Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.
In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
