My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Basalt SAPA-A-68826, (DOB 1/16/2022), 45 lb, shiny jet-black fur gently interrupted by a striking white marking on her chest. Here's what her foster had to say about her!

She's a loving dog and places her head on my lap or snuggles next to me while I am on the sofa or bed. Playful and tosses, fetches or chews on her toys and is middle of the road energetic dog. She is intelligent, resourceful and reached her comfort zone in our home within a week. She does follow me from room to room and stays close to me most of the time.

She is calm when inside, sleeping, playing with her toys, or watching squirrels and birds through door or window. Basalt turns on her back to receive belly rubs and stands still for lower back rubs and offers her paw for handshakes.

She lives parallel lives with my senior, 16 lb, Rat Terrier, Daisy, with exceptions when she is occasionally playful with temperamental Daisy.

She prefers being indoors and remains outside for longer periods of time to relieve herself, explore or chase squirrels. She allows her paws to be cleaned once inside. She does use training pads while I am away from home.

Basalt is extremely comfortable in vehicles, jumps into my car without hesitation and rides calmly and with minimal movement between front and back seat areas. She usually settles in the passenger seat or stands from the back area onto the console during rides.

She responds to correction though she occasionally jumps up when excited. She knows some commands and responds to: down; up; no; over here (with hand motions); inside?, outside?, this way; eat?, let's go to bed. She responds well to being on a leash attached to a harness.

Basalt would be most comfortable being allowed to be inside most of the time, with perhaps another dog because she interactively plays with another dog and me, and has not been around children or cats during her foster time with me.

More about this rescue

Our mission is to provide the programs and services needed to eliminate the killing of at-risk animals due to lack of space, adopter or foster.

San Antonio Pets Alive! is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Due to alarming euthanasia rates, San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA!) was founded in 2012. SAPA! is unique—it is the only high paced, high-volume rescue in San Antonio, saving 6,000 at-risk cats and dogs annually.

Since its inception, SAPA! has saved more than 47,000 dogs and cats. SAPA! provides safety nets for the dogs and cats that fall through the cracks of all other lifesaving options and end up on the euthanasia lists, often with just hours to be saved. SAPA! promotes the availability of these dogs and cats to other rescues, adopters and fosters.
