Here's what the humans have to say about me:
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!
Meet Maude, a happy, sweet Shih Tzu girl. She was found as a stray and is estimated to be 7-8 years old and weighs 12 pounds. Maude apparently lived in a home before because she is potty trained, but her new owner can expect there to be some accidents as she adjusts to a new environment. Maude loves the simple things, including time with her people, back scratches, and a warm blanket. She is very curious, especially if food is involved, and she is starting to explore more as she is getting comfortable in her foster home.
Maude had some digestive issues when she came into rescue, maybe from eating whatever food she could get as a stray, or perhaps due to neglect in her previous home, and she is a bit of a picky eater. Her foster mom is working on finding a nutritious food that she likes which also agrees with her digestive system.
Maude does well being left alone for short periods of time during the day and for the time being she hangs out in a puppy play pen when she is left alone. There is another Shih Tzu and cats in her foster home, but she hasn’t shown much interest in either and would do fine as an only dog or with other pets. Maude has trouble walking on slippery floors so she needs a home with carpet or area rugs to enable to her navigate the house. She can manage a few stairs, but would do best in a home with limited stairs and with someone who is capable of lifting her up and down the stairs.
It seems that in Maude’s previous life that she did not go on walks, since she was was not familiar with walking on a leash. She is learning to be on a leash and is getting used to walks. But she goes wherever she chooses, which is okay, because she is now beginning to enjoy being on walks, thoroughly taking in the sights and smells of the neighborhood. She would love a family who will take her on frequent walks so that she has a chance to explore and enjoy the outdoors.
These are the requirements for Maude’s new family:
- An adults only home, and one who is active enough to take her on a couple long walks every day. She would do okay with older children (teenagers), but young children would be too much for her.
- She would do well as an only dog or with another small respectful dog. She is not a playful dog who will interact with another dog, but will accept being with another dog. She has shown no interest in cats.
- A family that is experienced with dogs and Shih Tzu care. She needs regular grooming and to have her eyes and face cleaned every day.
- Maude has trouble on slippery floors and needs either a mostly carpeted home or a lot of rugs to help her navigate her home. She cannot go up and down many stairs, so her family must be able to carry her on the the stairs as well as on and off the furniture. She loves to be on the couch next to you, so this is a must!
- Attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue reunion held in September each year.
- Maude’s new family should live within 30 miles of the south metro area.
Maude is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total of $293.02.
