My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Donahue came to the city pound as a stray and was never claimed. We can't figure out why! He is so affectionate and listens very well. Don takes treats nicely and loves to take walks. Having good leash manners he is a volunteer favorite. He will kennel when asked and sit for treats.

Don is a large fella and is durable enough for long runs/walks and exploring but he is also content to follow you around the yard and relax on the couch next to his person. He is easy to handle and is treat and praise motivated so learning routines and new tricks should be easy.

He has played well with dogs 35 pounds and larger (we don't have small dogs to test him with). With slow introductions and supervision he would probably do well with any size dog. We feel he would not do well with cats. He is too fixated on their movements and doesn't redirect easily. We feel Don would be good around children because is calm and super friendly. It's always a good idea for children to be respectful of any dogs' body, space and food.

We are guessing him at 2-3 years old. Donahue is a great dog with lots of love to offer. If you adore large dogs and can give Don the life he deserves, please email mdowney@iowatelecom.net for an appointment to meet him.

Additional adoption info

Animals are available for adoption after the 10 day stray hold time has expired. The State of Iowa requires all animals adopted from this facility to be sterilized and have a Rabies vaccination.

We ask that you fill out an application prior to requests to meet animals. You can email CARE at mdowney@iowatelecom.net and request an application.

Adoptions can not be done through the mail or done as a gift for someone else. The actual adopter must fill out an application and meet with the Adoption Coordinator. The animal must reside at the address on the contract. We can not adopt outside of Iowa as it is too difficult to do home checks and review applications. We give priority to local adopters who own their home and have completed an adoption application. The applications usually take 5 business days to review so please be patient. We reserve the right to refuse an adoption to anyone.

Call ahead for an appointment, 641-782-2330 and leave a message.

Go meet their pets

To reach the pound, go south on Lake Shore Drive (next to McKinley Lake) past the outdoor pool and camp ground, it's the white metal building next to the Creston City Water Treatment Plant at 710 Lake Shore Drive.

The pound doesn't have a phone on site. There is no person on duty at the facility so anyone wanting to view animals must make an appointment by calling 641-782-2330 and leaving a message. Messages are returned between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and again between 5 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

If coming from Des Moines area, take Interstate Highway 35 South to Osceola. (Do not use the Clay Street exit). From Osceola take US Highway 34 West to Creston. Continue on Hwy 34 until you see an old Phillips 66 Station/Visitor Center. Turn right on Patriotic Parkway before the old gas station, make what seems like a U-turn onto Park Street. Continue until you reach a stop sign at an underpass. Turn left onto Spillway Road (looks like a gravel parking lot) continue west until you reach Lake Shore Drive (at the camp ground), then turn left toward the water treatment plant.

More about this rescue

The Creston City Pound is a holding facility for stray/abandoned animals within Creston City limits. Animals are held for 10 days to give owners time to claim their pets. After this time they become available for adoption. Here is where a dedicated group of volunteers come in. Creston Animal Rescue Effort (CARE), established in 1998, helps to get these pets adopted into new, permanent homes. We publish their photos in the local paper, hang flyers around the community, update this website and Facebook, host fundraisers and supply the pets with treats, vet care and love. Please be patient, ALL our work is done by volunteers who have full-time jobs and families. When calling please be sure you speak clearly and leave a phone number. You may also email CARE at mdowney@iowatelecom.net
