Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Fostered in Illinois
Fenced yard required
Upon arrival to CRGI, Dalton was whisked to a veterinary cardiologist, and quickly underwent surgery to correct a heart issue called Patent Ductus Arteriosus - which is one of the most common congenital heart defects in dogs. It occurs when the Ductus Arteriosus does not close after birth naturally. PDA surgery uses a band to close this vessel to restore normal heart function. Fortunately, Dalton received this surgery at a very young age, and is showing every sign of it being a success. We are anticipating that he will enjoy a happy, healthy life, and are very excited about his future.
Dalton will need a follow-up with the cardiologist in 5 months to make sure that all is well. This follow-up will be paid for by CRGI. Until that time, he will need to avoid anything that might jar him, so no roughhousing with other dogs, or children, and care must be taken on stairs for a little while. While these restrictions may be temporary, please understand that we must consider the puppy he is now, more than the dog he will be later, when selecting his new home.
At 4 months, Dalton is a smart, active little guy with a very strong personality and has no problem expressing his opinions. His puppy assessment tests indicate that he may not be suitable for a first-time dog owner and will need a family who will be firm with him, and provide continued training as he grows. He may be a bit much for little people, so we would prefer families with children older than 10 years of age. As stated above, Dalton can't play run & tumble with another dog right now, but we'd like him to have an older, tolerant dog to learn from, or supervised play if your dog is lively.
Dalton is learning not to chase cats at his foster home, and is doing a good job, for such a little guy. He is doing very well with his housebreaking lessons, and learning to walk on his leash. He knows 'sit' and 'down', has just mastered going up & down stairs, and is used to sleeping in his crate. He does well for grooming, and he loves to learn new things (or maybe he just loves the treats that come along with learning!) He will need to be neutered when he is older, and this, too, will be paid for by CRGI.
Dalton has faced a lot of obstacles in his short life, and has been strong & brave about the challenges presented. We are so proud of him and look forward to finding the family who will take him on his next, happier set of adventures!
