Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Joey-Yorkshire Terrier male puppy
Joey, DOB Sept 18/23, arrived into our care with his brother Chandler through no fault of their own.
They are Yorkshire Terriers (possibly some other breed mixed in)
The brothers arrived very young and tiny, and we have been working on their growth/weight gain and training and socialization
We have now completed all health checks and age appropriate vetting
His adoption will be on a strict neuter contract due to his young age, which requires his new family to live within 1 hr of St Jacobs, to return to our vet in Waterloo for additional vaccinations and his neuter surgery which will be paid for by Hobo Haven of course.
Joey does chase cats, he would be ideal in a home without cats/with another younger, playful canine companion, OR fine as an only dog with appropriate mental stimulation and socialization daily, with an experienced dog home who is aware of the terrier temperament.
He will require someone home often due to his young age , an active family prepared to invest all of the time and energy into his training, providing mental stimulation and understand that he is a busy puppy who will require commitment to his development and ongoing training needs.
If you are seeking a lap dog, he isn't the dog for you, he is a terrier with typical terrier traits and applicants should do their thorough research into Yorkshire Terrier traits prior to applying.
Due to his young age/life expectancy, he is not a suitable match for older seniors, nor for older dogs/dogs who would not appreciate a playful terrier puppy.
Children must be older and dog savvy due to his fragile size and high energy.
Located in St Jacobs ON Adoption fee $750 which includes neuter, microchip, vaccinations, flea/tick/hw prevention, deworming and of course doesn't begin to cover our cost of vetting and raising puppies prior to their adoption
NOTES ABOUT JOEY from his foster mom
Joey likes a short leash walk every morning and evening and lots of play in between.
IS YOUR FOSTER DOG FOOD MOTIVATED?
Very motivated by all food and treats
GOOD WITH DOGS BOTH IN THEIR HOME ENVIRONMENT AS WELL AS MEETING NEW DOGS?
Joey is unsure about new dogs we meet on walks but will watch them with interest. In the home he has two other dogs and he loves playing with them, but he doesn’t really respect their boundaries and like to jump up to them and nip their feet.
HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG RESPOND TO MEETING NEW PEOPLE IN THEIR HOME ENVIRONMENT AND OUTSIDE OF THE HOME? Joey Ioves to meet everyone, and greets excidedly but chases and nips if people run.
GOOD WITH CATS? Joey chases the cat and shows high prey drive
ANY GUARDING BEHAVIOURS NOTED INCL GUARDING FOOD/TREATS, PEOPLE OR FURNITURE/VALUED SPACES? IF SO, HOW IS IT MANAGED? Joey is not showing any guarding
HOUSETRAINED? No
CRATE TRAINED? Yes
Joey is generally quiet and clean in his crate in the night and during the workday
DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG SHOW SIGNS OF SEPARATION ANXIETY? No
PLEASE ELABORATE ON YOUR FOSTER DOG'S LEASH SKILLS. Joey loves to walk on his harness and leash. He is just learning to walk along the sidewalk with the other dogs. He’ll need practice to avoid jumping at the other dogs’ leashes to play tug of war.
HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG REACT WHEN YOU TOUCH THE EARS, TAIL, PAWS ETC. PLEASE ELABORATE. He is wiggly and needs more exposure to handling
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE DOG'S PERSONALITY/TEMPERAMENT Joey is a funny, feisty busy little guy who is interested in everything that moves. He loves to be near people, but doesn’t want to cuddle. He loves to play and chew.
THINGS NEEDING IMPROVEMENT SPECIFICS PLEASE We are working on not letting Joey bite pant legs. He needs practice playing gently He is learning to walk on leash and how to indicate that he needs to go outside.
POTTY HABITS: He goes out first thing in the morning, after he eats and an hour later. He is doing really well with housetraining and has very few accidents unless his schedule is interrupted.
Skills/Commands
SIT? Yes
STAY? No
WAIT? No
LAY DOWN? No
LEAVE IT? No
OFF? No
DOWN? No
COME? No
ANY OTHER SKILLS/COMMANDS? He comes to the call of “puppy puppy puppy” and gets a treat each time, so this is the way I get his attention
PLEASE DESCRIBE CURRENT ROUTINES AND PREFERENCES THAT WILL HELP THE DOG SETTLE INTO THEIR NEW HOME: He sleeps in a crate in the bedroom and usually goes to bed by 10, then up around 6 for a pee.
Then he will play and bounce around until he is fed at 6:30.
In and out and a walk. 6:30-7:30.
Then crated 7:30-10:30 - then pee break, playtime, lunch 12-1.
Afternoon nap, then out for a pee and out and about to play with the other dogs until he is fed at 5:00, walked at 6:30, playing and running around until 10pm.
STRENGTHS/AREAS THEY HAVE IMPROVED ON: He is getting better at house training, being groomed, he is better at settling down in the car. He has learned some bite inhibition except when he gets over stimulated by the excitement from the other dogs.
TRANSPORTATION-ANY MOTION SICKNESS OR ANXIETY IN VEHICLES? Unsettled for the first 15 minutes, no motion sickness. Will get very loud if he needs a pee break
PLEASE DESCRIBE THE PERFECT ADOPTIVE HOME FOR YOUR FOSTER DOG BASED ON WHAT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED. Joey would be fine as an only dog or if he were matched with a family that has a younger dog willing to deal with a small, active (slightly nippy) puppy.
He loves to chase, so no small pets, cats, older dogs or small children. He does like kids, but they would need to be able to provide patient guidance to help shape his puppy excitement, so older kids would be best. He is a terrier who loves to run, so a securely fenced yard would be ideal. He can be barky when he hears a sound or sees any movement, so an apartment would not be a good idea. He is very smart, he’d love to be involved in obedience, agility, hikes, trick training or dog sports
A perfect home for Joey would have experience with terriers and their unique traits/needs to set them up for success.
They would be prepared for the full range of typical puppy issues (nipping, chasing, housetraining, leash skills) with the help of positive training to ensure that he stays social.
Joey is just starting to learn many new things and with appropriate training and care he has huge potential to become a wonderful addition to a family with terrier knowledge and experience.
