His adoption will be on a strict neuter contract due to his young age, which requires his new family to live within 1 hr of St Jacobs, to return to our vet in Waterloo for additional vaccinations and his neuter surgery which will be paid for by Hobo Haven of course.

He will require someone home often due to his young age , an active family prepared to invest all of the time and energy into his training, providing mental stimulation and understand that he is a busy puppy who will require commitment to his development and ongoing training needs.

Due to his young age/life expectancy, he is not a suitable match for older seniors, nor for older dogs who would not appreciate a playful teething puppy.

Children must be older and dog savvy due to his hearing impairment.

ENERGY LEVEL: Medium-High: Charlie has lots of energy to play and go on walks, play ,and explore the yard.
Charlie is a great little walker but of course due to his age is only able to have short sniffy walks The rest of the day Charlie likes to spend time exploring the yard (supervised!) and playing with the other dogs or toys in the house.
IS YOUR FOSTER DOG FOOD MOTIVATED? Yes- Charlie loves food and treats!
Charlie thinks everyone is a potential friend. Charlie lives with a smaller puppy and two adult small dogs and plays well with all of them. We've also introduced Charlie to a large Bernese/poodle mix and he immediately wanted to play. Charlie is a playful puppy who is still learning the rules of playing and when the other dog has had enough-- he is fairly quick to know when to stop based on their body language.
Charlie loves everyone who comes over- he rushes over to greet them. He is very interested in meeting everyone on our walks. He is very outgoing, confident social puppy.
GOOD WITH CATS? We have a cat in our home and while he is interested he has learned the cat doesn't want to play like the other dogs and mostly respects that. He is happy to let the cat walk by and just give him a sniff or ignores him completely. We suspect that if he were in a home with just a cat and no other dogs he would be very interested in playing with the cat, however.

No guarding behaviours of food, treats, people or spaces.

CRATE TRAINED? Yes
Charlie sleeps in his crate at night and will put himself in his crate during the day when he wants to nap. He can be fussy for a few minutes if he's put in his crate when he's not in the mood but will settle down quickly.

DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG SHOW SIGNS OF SEPARATION ANXIETY? No

Charlie is still learning leash skills but is happy and eager to go on walks and generally walks well. More than half the time he is loose leash walking. He will occasionally stop and sit (and wait for a treat) but will quickly continue.

HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG REACT WHEN YOU TOUCH THE EARS, TAIL, PAWS ETC. PLEASE ELABORATE. Charlie is still learning to be handled- he's a bit confused about why we want to hold his paws and check his teeth and ears. We continue to practice these skills and re-enforce with treats.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE DOG'S PERSONALITY/TEMPERAMENT Charlie is a very confident and playful puppy. Because he is deaf is does not have the usual apprehensions towards loud noises like vacuums. He loves to explore his world and play with other dogs and toys. He can be a little monkey if he gets bored so its important to keep his mind occupied with play, puzzles or appropriate exercise which is normal with a puppy of his age and energy level.

THINGS NEEDING IMPROVEMENT SPECIFICS PLEASE Charlie is still teething and because he is deaf the normal reactions to his bites are ineffective. We try to redirect with toys or remove ourselves from him until he stops.
Charlie is still potty training, he will have accidents in the house if not taken outside at regular intervals (every few hours, after waking from sleep, after playing, after eating).
Charlie will sometimes eat his poop, we go outside with him and immediately clean up his poops . He does not try to eat the other dog's poop

MEDICAL : Charlie is a partial albino with blue eyes, and is deaf. In fully albino dogs, bright sunlight in their eyes may affect their vision but we have seen no evidence of this in Charlie and he is only considered a partial albino due to his brown streak of pigment in his coat.

It has also been discovered that Charlie has ruptured tympanic membranes (commonly referred to as eardrums)- It separates the outer ear from the middle ear. When sound waves reach the tympanic membrane they cause it to vibrate. The vibrations are then transferred to the tiny bones in the middle ear.

Charlie's vet and a specialist cannot determine if he was born this way or if it is the result of an injury before he came into our care but he is in no pain whatsoever and his ears are monitored at every vet appt to observe if they membranes are in fact healing, or are a birth defect.
It is not likely the entire cause of his deafness so if they do heal, it's likely he will still be deaf.
Because his ear drums are ruptured it is essential that no liquids enter his ear canals (eg during bathing or grooming).

POTTY HABITS: We try to bring Charlie out at regular intervals (minimum every 2-3 hours), after meals, after playing or after waking.

Charlie is pretty intuitive and if you get his eye line he will pay attention to you, he will usually follow if you wave your hand and signal to him to follow when inside.
He is being taught to observe body language during his training/hand signals since he cannot hear

STRENGTHS/AREAS THEY HAVE IMPROVED ON: Charlie has quickly learned how fun walks can be- he is such a good little walker for his age! He was also quick to learn the signal for "sit".

TRANSPORTATION- Charlie travels in the car in his crate. He whines for a few minutes and will settle down. No motion sickness or anxiety.

***Charlie needs a home with an active family who is home during the day to meet his specific needs as a young puppy. He also does well with other dogs and would love someone to play with.
Because Charlie is deaf, he needs a family who is experienced with training deaf dogs or willing to commit to learning how to train a deaf dog with an approved trainer, and fully understand how to meet his unique needs and set him up for success.

CHARLIE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR FIRST TIME DOG OWNERS
* Due to his young age, Charlie is seeking a home where someone is home more often to provide him with the TLC/mental stimulation and ongoing training that will set him up for success.
*Children must be 10+ yrs/respectful and dog savvy
* As an active young puppy with a life expectancy of 15+yrs , this dog requires a family who is able to meet all of their needs for their entire lives. Geriatric applicants are not an appropriate match for this reason.
*Inground/ground level Pools and ponds must be separately fenced from yard
*Strict neuter contract, must be located within 1hr of St Jacobs to attend future vet appts in Waterloo
* Mandatory registration for approved training classes

For anyone possibly interested in adopting from Hobo Haven, here are a few, but not all, criteria to be aware of:

An adoption application must be completed and approved, including vet references as well as a home visit (Zoom ), prior to meeting available dogs.

All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit.

Our motto is "know better/do better" and we ask all adoptive families to be as committed to providing our dogs with quality nutrition as they are to providing love. This documentary is not advertising, purely just educational.

We do not allow applicants to visit until pre-approved for adoptions. Our dogs are in private foster family homes, not in a shelter.
